Daily Inspiration: Meet Ben Law

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ben Law.

Ben Law

Hi Ben, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Well, I’m a Nashville native and I’ve been singing as long as I can remember. From church choirs to talent shows and then bands with my friends and now playing music professionally, I can’t remember a time when singing hasn’t been a big part of who I am. I remember the first taste I got of the music industry. When I was in first grade, I had an opportunity to sing BGVs on this Christian album for kids. It was a blast and I think that was when I knew that this was something I wanted to do!

I started playing guitar in high school and before you know it, me and a good friend of mine were sitting out on the street in Franklin, playing for tips on weekends when it was nice out. Then, I graduated high school and went to Belmont for Music Business where I began to see how to give this a real shot at being a career. Then, I had some years of a lot of self-doubt because of just how many incredible musicians and artists are all around me here in town.

I didn’t think I could cut it but after realizing that if I never gave it a shot, I’d always regret it and wonder if I could have made it, and a lot of prayers, I quit my job at the time and with the help of a few friends, I started playing down at several of the clubs on Broadway full time! I fully expected to need a part-time job for a while but right away I had more shows than I could handle!

That was when I knew that I’d made the right call. Last year I played 366 shows, put out 2 singles, made a ton of new friends, and just watched God answer my prayers and provide for me in more ways than I could have imagined! This year, I’m trying to get in a writing room way more often and get rolling with original music so I’m stoked to see what’s next!

We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Well, like I mentioned before, for me, I’m my own worst enemy. It’s hard for me to get out of my head and out of my way. Like a lot of artists, I am a perfectionist and if something doesn’t look or sound perfect right away, I tend to just say “forget it” and move on to something else or to worry about how a song that I’m playing, how I look, or sound, or whatever else will be received by a crowd or online or whatever.

With a performance-based job, you have days where the response is great, days where the response is bad, and days when you don’t get any response at all. On the bad days, it can be easy to put it all on myself, that the crowd thinks I’m terrible or whatever when in reality, there are a thousand and one things that can be going on other than my performance to impact the response I’m getting, but in the moment, it can be hard to keep that in mind.

In addition, this industry has become more and more focused on social media relevancy so if you’re not killing it online, it’s that much harder to get to leap up to the bigger stages and I’ll be the first to say that I’m awful when it comes to social media. I post when I can but I’m far from being savvy when it comes to knowing all the tricks and ways to do things on there so that’s been a struggle for sure!

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m a country music artist born and raised here in Nashville. While country is my center, I love to incorporate lots of different styles in my sets, from rock to blues and soul, pop and gospel too. For me, I like to mix and match songs from different genres to make the shows as fun for folks as possible. My goal is for everyone to have at least one song I play that they can sing along with and dance to.

If I can do that, I’ll have a great show. I’m happy to say that by that measure, I’ve had more great shows than not so yeah I’d say I’m pretty proud of that! As far as what sets me apart from other folks, I wish I could say that I’m the best singer or that I have the largest repertoire, but there’s always gonna be someone better. What I can say is that no one’s gonna put in more effort to make sure that whatever crowd is in front of me has the best time possible!

Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
I guess for me, I’d say that simply the fact that I have a loving wife, an incredibly supportive family, and group of friends, and the ability to make a living doing what I love is what makes me happy! Is there always more to push for, yes, but I know if this was all I got, I’d be happy!
