Today we’d like to introduce you to Brandy Gordon.
Hi Brandy, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I have been an artist since I can remember. I have been drawing, sketching, sculpting, and painting since I could pick up a pencil. I walked into a cosmetology school one day for other reasons and knew I wanted to create art that people lived in. I loved seeing how their lives were influenced positively. That has lead to a rewarding career in this industry since 1995. It has afforded me the ability to be who I am and to represent a community that is marginalized at this time. I have got to work with some wonderful people through the years both educating and being educated by them. In 2020 I decided to venture into a partnership with another stylist, up until this point I ha e worked in the corporate salons since 1995. I wanted to be my own boss and make decisions for my own life. Me and my partner outgrew our own suite and ventured into our own individual suites. I am still building but I wanted to be role model for those with handicaps and for transgender women. I want those who feel as if they are pushed down they are stronger than their oppressors. Make their weaknesses their strength.
I lost my both my feet in 2012 and I strive to show others that their goes are still achievable even when societies tries to tell you that you won’t make it or be accepted. Was it easy? No, but it was worth it to see the surprised look on the faces of those who claims that you will fail. My client’s happiness says it all.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
First, I came from a poor background. I am from a small town called Palmer in South East Tennessee on a mountain. I am a transgender woman in a conservative state. I have proven that success can be achieved in spite of others disapproval. You surround yourself with positive people who will support you emotionally and professionally. As I mentioned both my feet were amputated in 2012. I looked at my doctors and told them get me back to work. It took me being stubborn and the right prosthetics to keep moving forward in my career.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a hair colorist first send a hair cutter second. I love to create and see those who live in it flourish and prosper. I love to teach others. Giving others techniques gives them more tools to use and the ability to go further in their career. I most proud of my ability to persevere no matter what is thrown at me. I feel that my small-town hairstylist personality and attitude sets me apart from others. I want a salon that makes my clients feel like family but keep it professional.
What do you like and dislike about the city?
I love the diversity that is spilling in. It has may things to offer different individuals and many hidden gems like locally owned businesses. There is a bit of conservative attitudes and notions that are a base in our city but it is slowly giving way to progress that would be my only complaint and of course, the traffic laugh out loud.
