Today we’d like to introduce you to Bryn Colodny.
Hi Bryn, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
We met in our first semester of college, at Berklee College of Music in 2017, where we bonded over our shared love of songwriting. Through living together throughout the rest of college, our friendship grew. During COVID, we wrote our first song together, not thinking it would land us where we are. We slowly realized as writers, we formed a strong partnership that allowed us to explore our art in deeper ways. We moved to Nashville together in 2021 and within our first year of performing as a duo, we set the foundation for Sayryn.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Both of us being from New York originally, acclimating to a new city in a new region where we only knew two people, was difficult. Finding our footing in Nashville as a new artist was challenging, performing where we could and figuring out our audience. Since Sayryn was originally intended to be a side project of ours, forming our identity as a duo took a lot of time. A lot of these challenges however, have connected us with amazing collaborators who have helped us shape what Sayryn is- taking us from a simple duo setup to a fuller sound with a backing band.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
As songwriters we pen a shared diary, exploring deep insecurities and existential thought in melancholic and introspective ways. We look at life for the good, bad and the ugly all while knowing it’s going to be okay. We can talk about the hard parts while knowing there’s hope; a message we feel resonates with our current fans and new listeners alike.
Our uniqueness lies in our collaboration as two individuals, with differing influences and voices, creating a sound and story that is our own. Together we are able to explore the softness of Folk music and with the help of our band, the grit of Rock music, all the while sharing melodic lines and creating haunting harmony.
Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
Taking the time to slow down and reflect on who we actually are as an artist has been an important lesson for us. It’s easy to get swept up into trends and popular music around you, but staying true to your art is vital for connection and finding your audience. It’s hard to be vulnerable and put yourself out there, but working through that fear will open doors you never thought were possible.
