Today we’d like to introduce you to Caleb and Madison Petty.
Hi Caleb and Madison, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers.
We were both born and raised in eastern North Carolina. We grew up in the same hometown but somehow never really met until high school. We started dating soon after and eventually graduated and went off to Belmont University in Nashville. Caleb studied commercial guitar, while Madison studied Music Business, with a production emphasis Our time at Belmont and in Nashville really helped us grow as people and musicians. As graduation crept up on us, we started to realize that living in the city wasn’t for us.
After all, we were both raised in a tiny town in North Carolina. We decided to move home to be close to family and get back to our roots. However, giving up music was never an option. Caleb wrote and released some solo music in high school, but Madison started getting more involved along the way. Once we got married we decided that we wanted our music to reflect us both and be more of a partnership, hence the name “Petty”. This was always the end goal, which is why Madison studied more of the business and production side in college.
We are so excited to release our new debut album as Petty on June 24th, as well as some singles that come before it!!
All the songs on this new album were completely co-written by us. With us moving back home, we wanted to get our family involved in the album so even though we are the main musicians on this record, Caleb with lead vocals and guitar, and Madison with drums and background vocals, we also brought in our parents and our siblings to play and sing on it!
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has been anything other than a smooth road. Since we are a year apart in age, Caleb spent his freshman year at Belmont, while Madison was still finishing her senior year in high school. We were about 700 miles away from each other, and really only saw each other for a few days out of the month, if we got lucky. Long distance was really rough, but it definitely helped strengthen our relationship. Things started looking up when Madison started her freshman year at Belmont. That was short-lived however because only a few weeks into her second semester, everything was shut down due to Covid.
We had to return home, finish our classes online, and miss out on imperative opportunities in music city. Once we were able to return the following school year, there were so many restrictions, that we were never able to really get the full college or musical experience. Having to finish up college like this, as well as being so far from home was very difficult for us, and helped shape our decision of moving home. Though it hasn’t always gone smoothly, we are proud of the music that we have created during these difficult times.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
The biggest thing that sets us apart is our dynamic. Our musical relationship came way after our romantic relationship. When we started dating, we didn’t even know that the other played any type of instrument. As our relationship has grown, the music has as well. Our relationship is the foundation of our music, not the other way around.
Everything we do is always a team effort and we fill in where the other lacks. Every song we have written and recorded has been an equal split in some way. Not to mention that a lot of the behind-the-scenes work is also split.
We are most proud of the fact that we were able to move home and be with family, while still pursuing music at a professional level.
Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
We grew up in the same hometown, within 10 miles of each other, but somehow never met until high school. We both grew up in the church and were surrounded by music.
Caleb has always been introverted and quiet, whereas Madison has always been outgoing and a people person, which is just another way that we complement each other. We played in some local bands together in high school, which flourished the idea of wanting to move to Nashville one day and pursue a music career.
