Today we’d like to introduce you to Caleb Mckenney.
Hi Caleb, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I began my journey into photography very young. My grandfather was a military photographer in Okinawa, and my father and uncles grew up loving photography, so I began loving it as I grew up. I got my first camera over 18 years ago when I was 10 years old and slowly grew in my knowledge of the camera.
Three years ago, I went out west to the desert and I really began to start pushing my career towards photography. As a landscape photographer, the Covid- 19 year really prevented me from traveling to destinations that really fit my style so I have begun trying to shoot the beauty we have in nature around Nashville.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
My photography journey was a smooth road while I was just clicking away and didn’t have any expectations. Over the past three years, I’ve faced higher self-expectations and bouts of imposter syndrome. I’ve really had to teach myself to trust in my work and my drive to improve.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a landscape photographer based in Nashville, TN. I enjoy creating scenes with beautiful colors but I also love creating high-contrast black and white images. I’m currently working on a collection of geothermal abstracts shot in Yellowstone in 2019 and I’m really proud of the work I’m doing there. I hope to raise some money for the park with some sales out of that collection.
My work is focused on the beauty of the earth itself and the incredible places we have been given. I try to showcase that from my perspective by picking out intimate scenes that most may miss the beauty of.
We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
I remember taking “photos” of my stuffed animals by posing them as wildlife and pretending to take pictures with my fingers. It’s something that I’ve been reminded of a lot lately and it has brought me great joy when I think of my field.
