Today we’d like to introduce you to Chanel Hill.
Hi Chanel, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Baking has been a passion that started in high school. As life unfolded… baking got away from me. Then in 2017, I gave birth to my son. Numerous complications resulted in a delay with me returning to work. In this newfound free time, I began rediscovering an old love. I baked and my family would share the goodies with their coworkers. One day someone asked me to make a birthday cake. I had zero clue on how to decorate a cake. I apologize to the person that received that cake 😂😂 but to my surprise, they loved it! Over the next few years, I watched countless videos and tested endless recipes, honing in and developing my artistic vision and execution ability. During Covid, I battled with depression and often struggled with the decision to embark on this journey or not. In Dec. of 2021, the decision was finalized and Sugar by Chanel became a company. I am the first-generation business owner in my family. My social media is blossoming with over 6k followers on Facebook alone! The immense and rapid growth is only proof that I am living in my purpose. It’s not about cake or cookies… it’s about creating 1st birthday cake, being a part of a memory that a family will share for a lifetime… or witnessing the first bite send someone straight down memory lane… and then they smile that big ol’ happy grin!! That’s when I know I’ve nailed it! Sugar by Chanel is all about quality, creativity, nostalgia, and pure sweet joy.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It definitely has not been smooth, lol. I have quit and restarted so many times. I’ve spent countless hours beating myself up, but my wonderful clients never let me give up. They always remind me of why I have to do this. I even recently opened a suite, located at D4 Salon Suites, on Lebanon Pike. I opened it on Valentine’s Day. It was doing really well but then gas prices surged, and then some personal health issues arose and so, unfortunately, it has to close. Most people would be discouraged or feel like closing up shop is a failure. I choose to always find the good. I’m thankful for the opportunity I did have. I formed new professional and personal relationships that will greatly impact my future endeavors. I’ve learned that every setback or struggle contains a positive lesson.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I put creative new spins on all of your southern dessert classics. My most popular desserts being my Honey Bun Chess Squares, Cinnamon Roll Peach Cobbler, and my Strawberry Oreo Cheesecake Brownies… they actually went viral!! I am extremely proud of that! Outside of dessert, I also offer custom-decorated cakes for any celebration. I’m an artist at heart. My medium just happens to be buttercream lol. I absolutely love creating one-of-a-kind, edible, works of art.
What do you think about luck?
I wouldn’t say it’s luck at all! I feel that I am aligned with my purpose. I have a gift when it comes to sugar. I believe that when you are doing what you are called to do, everything aligns to allow you to flourish in it. Some may call that luck; I call it Divine guidance.
