Today we’d like to introduce you to Daisney Lacroix.
Hi Daisney, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Growing up, there were two things I always kept close by: my Bible and my books from the local library. You’d never see me without one or the other. And that’s how it was for years, until I went off to college.
You know how the story goes. You get to university and lose a part of yourself you’ve always known. I was too busy with books, studies, and hanging out with friends.
Well, a few years after university, a dear friend of mine got me back into reading, but in a way I hadn’t expected: through writing. I had just helped her brainstorm ideas for a business she wanted to start, and she offered to help me with something too. At first, I had nothing. But then I remembered. Sometimes, as a reader, you don’t just fall in love with stories. You start imagining your own. That was a part of me I had lost too.
I had written countless stories growing up, especially in my journals. So, in 2022, I handed my friend a manuscript I had started back in 2013. To my surprise, she loved it and encouraged me to finish it.
So I did.
Right now, I’m slowly growing my social media pages on X and Instagram, both under my first and last name. I’m continuing to write, learn, and share my work, and I hope to become a traditionally published author soon.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
No, it’s been one of the toughest roads I’ve been on. I’ve learned that there are rules to writing and getting traditionally published, especially when you’re from a marginalized community. It’s hard watching your (in a way) colleagues surpass you, but not hard enough to succumb to folding myself to fit into the box created by the industry. So, for now, I grit my teeth and push ahead.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
As a creative, I post book reviews and recommendations on Instagram and share my writing journey on X. I’m most proud of my completed manuscript, which touches on the subject of mental health. What sets me apart among those who write in my genre, fantasy romance, is that I’m part of a growing marginalized community of writers who choose to tell stories that challenge the unofficial expectations placed on BIPOC writers.
Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
My advice would be: don’t write alone! Find your community with new and experienced writers who can teach you along the way, so that when you’re truly ready to get out there and publish, you’ll have a better head start. That’s something I wish I had known!
