Today we’d like to introduce you to David Bregande
Hi David, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I graduated in 1995 from The University of Notre Dame with a BA in design. I focused primarily on graphic design and also won national recognition in industrial design as a student. After college I pursued a career in music in Austin TX and Atlanta, all the time providing the visual elements for posters, advertisements, and CD artwork. I began freelancing on the side and it became my full time path shortly thereafter.
After decades working in all disciplines of design including logo design, direct mail, digital assets, branding, CD/digital music, and even comic book illustration for a variety of corporate entities, I relocated to Nashville in 2014 and expanded my clientele to include record labels, alcoholic beverages and restaurant branding, amongst others.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Design has evolved quickly from pen, ink and pasteboards and print to digital, then cloud based and crossing over with web and social media, and now the emergence of AI. It requires constant learning, pivoting from technology to technology while maintaining lessons learned from all disciplines. It is essential to meet the clients needs with the flexibility that your idea might not be their idea, and to know when you are better served passing work on to someone more in tune with their requests. I always make an attempt to learn something new and deliver, but experience has taught me when it is better to consult someone outside of my strengths in order to build trust with a client for possible future work.
The challenges are many. Client acquisition is not a predictable science, so being sure your work is out in front of people as often as possible is the best way to create a pipeline for yourself. That means every lunch, coffee, or social outing can be an opportunity to let people know what you do, and ask how you can help them.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Logo design and branding is a strength, but any chance to use my skills as an illustrator is especially fulfilling. I especially embrace any opportunity to work with musicians and bands, and I have been fortunate enough to design for some well known artists that have also become great friends. Having my two great loves – art and music – come together in my work is both exciting and satisfying.
What’s next?
I am currently learning the word of UI/UX so I can bring my eye and experience to the world of web and application development. I am always on the lookout for a chance to provide illustrations to someone else’s project, whether it be a book, instruction manual, poster or album.
