Daily Inspiration: Meet Derrick Diggs

Today we’d like to introduce you to Derrick Diggs.

Hi Derrick, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’ve been in the hospitality industry for over a decade. About 8 years in I decided to switch from being a fine dining server to a bartender. Living in Memphis, Tn wasn’t giving me the best job opportunities so I decided to take my talents to Nashville, Tn. My first job was Pinewood Social. I remember taking every piece of information and treating it as if it was a school for the gifted. Since then, I’ve just been constantly moving up and learning everything I can to make the best drink and experiences possible.

My Dad is from Ghana and my Mom is from Jackson, Miss. That combination coupled with being raised in a city like Memphis makes me the man that I am.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
My road has definitely been a hard one. When I first moved to Nashville I didn’t have anywhere to live and I slept in my car under Nashville’s famous “Pedestrian Bridge” until I found a place. I was also all alone. No family. No friends. Fresh off a divorce. Also, because most jobs worked on a seniority system, I barely was able to get enough shifts to make ends meet.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m currently the General Manager of EgMc, a tapas and craft cocktail lounge located on the historic Jefferson St in Nashville Tn.

I’m a hospitality guru and craft cocktail mixologist.

I play with FIRE, I chop Ice, and I have a flair about myself that cannot be matched. Not to mention my drinks are superb.

What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
Patience, everything that is for you will always come to you.
