Daily Inspiration: Meet GODDESS PHOENIX

Today we’d like to introduce you to GODDESS PHOENIX.

Hi GODDESS, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I spawned into this dimension at the turn of the millennium, in the Bible Belt. Whenever I could walk and talk I began singing and dancing and making all kinds of art. I self produced and created my first audiovisual project in 2014–an album of music accompanied by interdimensional visuals all created by me. During high school I made a lot of album artwork for bands until someone approached me while I was taking photos at lollapalooza in Chicago in 2017 and insisted I pursue modeling—so I visited some local agencies and signed with a very big international one. I focused my energy on modeling and getting my business degree online—worked throughout Europe and beyond until the industry just became too soul sucking so I left to pursue performance art: music, visual art, dance, and acting—wholeheartedly. For the last 4 years I have been a full time dancer, and as of the last 2 years a part time drag queen and circus performer—all of these things heavily influence my music and vice versa. I have a universe of art and I am excited to keep revealing more and more of it to the world.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
The journey has not been smooth the whole time, but the more I heal myself and align with the path of my desires things become more smooth. With the state of the world and all of the suffering in it, I feel silly mentioning my struggles. Truthfully though, I know it’s valuable to show people that might struggle in the ways I have that it is possible to still get what you want and to heal. I have a cocktail of diagnoses that I didn’t know I had until about 5 years ago when I started my mental health healing journey. Along with having autism, ocd, ptsd (life was lifing lol), I have struggled my whole life with anorexia and left the modeling industry because of it. I am happy to say I am in remission for anorexia and have been through a ton of therapy for my mental issues—still trying to accept my intellectual disabilities—but I am the happiest and healthiest I have ever been. I realize resources for mental health are not that accessible, which is one of the reasons it took me so long to go to therapy—but it’s never too late. Not to toot my own horn but I’m pretty fucking proud of how far I’ve come and no it’s not always easy, but easier…absolutely. I’m also lucky to have pretty accepting family, a bunch of very sweet friends, and a lovely community as a whole. As a genderqueer person and a dancer in the Bible Belt, I’m so lucky to have such love around me that keeps me believing in love and myself.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a multidisciplinary performance artist. My work extends from performing corporate strip shows, to aerial and contortion shows, to drag shows, burlesque shows, and of course my self produced and performed music. I perform all around Nashville multiple times a week doing one or more of the things I mentioned above and also travel to other states when the financial incentive is enough. I am a full time working performance artist and I have so much up my sleeve to show and express to the world. Any and every time I get to showcase my art to the world fills me with more love then I could ever express in words. Any and every time I get to showcase my art is transformative and fills me with more love than I can even express in words.

Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
Really, and I mean really, get so clear on what exactly it is you want to attain—start surrounding yourself with it in any and every way possible. Get into rooms with people who do what you want to do or have reached the goals you are trying to attain—talk to lots of them and ask honestly what they could show you and if they are willing to. Offer a trade even. You’d be surprised how many artists find it an honor to have another artist come to them wanting to learn. I’ve had this happen to me myself and it’s the biggest honor in the world to be asked to be someone mentor, like truly.
