Today we’d like to introduce you to Gracie Hall.
Hi Gracie, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I grew up in the ‘live music capital of the world’, Austin, Texas. I grew up going to live music events every weekend with my family and friends. There was live music everywhere whether that be in restaurants, parks, SXSW, ACL, etc. My love for music was very clear and it was such an important part of my life when I began to discover my own music taste. Growing up I was always the kid who wore strange clothes and never wanted to look like the other kids. I wanted to stand out and I am so grateful I was able to find a community that thinks the same way in college.
As a kid, I wanted so badly to be a singer and songwriter but quickly realized that was not my realm of expertise. I participated in many school plays and choir concerts over the years but ultimately chose athletics because I was told I had a better future in that field. Although they were right because I am currently competing at the Division 1 level for cross country, track & field, my artistic perception of the world is still very present.
With that being said, athletics strongly influenced my current field of study, Dietetics. I love learning about the food system in
America and educating people on the misconceptions we have about food. At this point in my life, I dream of taking photography full time but I will always have the passion to share my knowledge of food and the way it biochemically affects our bodies. I want to help plan meals for people with auto-immune diseases such as multiple sclerosis, celiac, cystic fibrosis, etc.
I began to spark an interest in photography as a sophomore in high school but was not sure what field of art I was most interested in. When I got to Nashville, I was presented with so many opportunities and discovered that there is a market for creating a style of photography for musicians. I hope one day I am able to create for an artist on their tour.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The hardest part for me was getting the courage to start taking my passion seriously. There are only so many ‘influencers’ you can follow, YouTube videos you can watch, or Pinterest boards you can make, but the best way to learn and connect is by jumping on every opportunity you get. I had a difficult time finding the courage to ask people to shoot with me in order to create my portfolio. Once I had a few good shoots people began to reach out. I also got connected with @themusicroomofficial who connected me to so many local Nashville artists who I work with now. I realize I am so lucky to have this community in Nashville with all these amazing opportunities.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I work with a lot of local Nashville musicians for promotional artwork whether that be album covers, tour photos, or short videos. I also work a lot with concert photography and local events. I love the idea of creating a visual representation of an artist’s music.
Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc.?
I am always listening to podcasts! I love storytelling podcasts, specifically ones that tell the story in the first person. ‘This is Actually Happening’ is a podcast that allows people who have been through traumatic events or have had mental disorders to tell their stories and raise awareness of other individuals who have been through similar events. I cannot say enough good things about this podcast it is amazing and by far my favorite I’ve listened to! I have tried to listen to podcasts on entrepreneurship and photography however they are usually conversational podcasts and tend to be about wedding photography which is not my field of interest or expertise.
