Today we’d like to introduce you to Heather Jett. Them and their team share their story with us below:
Residential and commercial cleaning service. Serving the Middle Tennessee Area Since 2009.
Jett’s Cleaning Service began 13 years ago, in the mind of a 60-hour working mother in the medical field, who recognized the need for help around the house in order to be present in her family. For the last 13 years, Heather fought for this dream by working part-time cleaning others’ homes but knew her family needed her income and could not take the chance to go full-time just yet. Finally, in November 2018, after the layoff of a job, Jett’s Cleaning Service debuted full-time.
Since November 2018, we have now serviced over 125 homes recurring, along with commercial, post-construction, and move-out cleanings. In the last 2 years, we have brought Heather’s husband on board, along with 5 full-time employees, and 1 part-time.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
One of the biggest struggles we have and still battle is the stigma cleaning is not a skill.
Historically cleaning has never been seen as the necessary or skilled work that it is, but as only menial labor, which requires little effort to do properly. We fight daily to change that stigma. We train our employees in the proper ways to care for our client’s homes. Knowing the difference of what chemicals can be used on what surfaces. We require continuing education and I am constantly doing research to better our processes. Just like most service industries, if you don’t know to understand the “why”, you can not understand the “how” properly.
We were also one year into a full-time business when Covid hit. Businesses were closing left and right. Our clients were losing their jobs. Clients were worried about virus transmission. We were worried about possible transmission to all of our clients, but especially our at-risk and elderly clients. Not to mention possible transmission to our families.
It was terrifying. With this being a “luxury” service, fear crept in. Would clients start canceling their services? So I learned to pivot. To market the science behind cleaning. The necessity of it. We learned to not only market cleaning but help others understand that it ok to not be able to do it all. Households found themselves in situations where they were having to learn to work from home, school their children from home, AND keep up with all of the normal daily responsibilities of adulthood.
Owning a small business is NEVER an easy task, it’s a fight uphill daily, but I’m blessed to do it beside some of the most amazing humans I’ve ever met.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Honestly, I began my career when I was 15 in the medical field as a Nursing Tech, working my way to Physical Therapy Tech, and then into certified medical transcription and medical billing and coding. I have what is known as a “servant’s heart”. I am most content when able to serve and help others. I was able to fulfill that need for many years in the medical field, until one day it changed.
I was no longer being fulfilled due to the politics and atmosphere that has become spun into the medical field. At that time, I was already cleaning houses on the side as a second job. When I got laid off in the 4th quarter of 2018, I decided to just give it my best shot to make this a full-time company.
We specialize in cleaning, but more importantly, we specialize in relationships. Our clients know we do a good job, but they are more aware that we treat them like family. We celebrate life’s milestones with them, we grieve their losses with them, and we love on them as if they are part of each of our families.
We pride ourselves on great customer service. We are aware that we may fall short on occasion, but our clients know that we take constructive criticism very well, and do our very best to adapt and learn.
I believe what sets us apart from others is two things:
One: our company motto is “Employees First, Clients second”. Joe and I do our very best to make our work environment the best we can for our employees. Their happiness (within reason) means the world to us, and we feel if we have content employees, they better care for our clients.
Second: we take our skills very seriously. We hire employees who want to learn and grow their skill set. We also hire like-minded employees who also want to serve others.
Any big plans?
At this moment, we are hoping to add another team to our work family, but in today’s climate, we are taking it day by day.
