Today we’d like to introduce you to Hollie Stockdale.
Hi Hollie, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
The pivot into fuller doula work came during the COVID‐19 pandemic in 2020. I saw friends and family struggling, especially with breastfeeding and postpartum support, in part because medical professionals were constrained by distancing, fear, etc.
I began by helping close friends and family with postpartum and breastfeeding questions. Word spread, demand rose, and I began to feel more pulled to serve my community by serving in the capacity of community doula.
She then left her hospital nursing position and formally founded Hub City Doula later in 2020.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The journey here has been deeply meaningful, but also challenging at times.
I began my doula journey during COVID-19, when isolation, fear, and a breakdown in in-person medical support left many mothers struggling. This environment gave me the drive to step in—but it also made the transition intense and emotionally heavy.
I was a hospital nurse for nearly a decade before stepping away to start Hub City Doula. Leaving that structured, secure role was both freeing and difficult. I definitely struggled with a sense of “letting go of who I used to be” and forging a new professional identity.
In my area (Jackson, TN), many people were unfamiliar with what a doula was or saw it as something only for wealthier or “crunchy” moms. Part of the process has involved educating the public, pushing through skepticism, and making doula care feel accessible and normal for community based care.
I feel aligned with who I am at a soul level in this work. That connection keeps me going, even when the path is rough.
Once people began to understand what I offered—and experienced it firsthand—word of mouth spread, and many embraced her services. This helped me grow. I leaned into a mindset of trust—believing that showing up fully and authentically for the families I support will open the right doors.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Nonprofit community birth, postpartum doula and Internationally Board Certified Lactation Consultant
“I’m most proud of creating a space where mothers feel seen, supported, and empowered—whether that’s through hands-on care, community events, or just being someone they trust to show up when it matters most. I meet the families where they are.”
What matters most to you? Why?
What matters most to me as a doula is being fully present—offering more than just care, but real, nonjudgmental support through every stage of motherhood. I want every woman I work with to feel seen, heard, and never alone. Whether I’m at a birth, supporting breastfeeding, or sitting with a mom in the middle of the night, my heart is to show up, hold space, and honor her story.
