Daily Inspiration: Meet Jake Roberts

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jake Roberts

Hi Jake, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I started by just being passionate about capturing moments with my friends and family! We were always outside and I found that I really enjoyed finding ways to show others the world I saw in creative and fun ways! Although it was fun as a hobby, I hadn’t considered it as a viable career option. My plan since before I could remember was to attend college and pursue mechanical engineering. However, as my interest in the world of photography and videography grew, so did my enjoyment and passion. My videography teacher in high school, Mr. Fairfax, started to notice this, and was very supportive during the beginning of my journey. During my senior year of high school, he encouraged me to at least look into pursuing this passion as a career. He helped me understand how the career would work, and I was able to look into opportunities that allowed me to start in the right direction.
Instead of jumping into the industry right away, I went to film school which gave me the resources to study film theory for three years, and I interned at a camera rental house which allowed me to work with and learn with the best equipment we have today. This put me in the best spot to help my clients, and I am very grateful that I had the opportunity to learn and grow my own abilities!

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
I’m not sure if a smooth road exists, and if one does that sounds a little boring! I love the ups and downs that comes with this type of creative work, but I definitely wouldn’t be able to get through them without a strong supportive community. There have been big opportunities that didn’t end up working out, and it has been tough when that happens, but I don’t put my self worth into the success of my career. I do always strive to learn more, and deliver the best possible product to my clients, but my worth as a person comes from my creator.
And even if a smooth road existed, I’m not sure I would choose to take it. Overcoming challenges, and finding ways to solve problems has made me better, and I enjoy working with problems as they arise. Challenges are what make me better. By solving them I can learn new things and take them with me onto the next job – and especially in a career where every job is unique, I can be ready to meat any obstacle that arrises in an efficient and creative fashion.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I specialize in producing content for local artists and businesses in the Nashville area. My goal is to create content that is not only engaging, allowing businesses and artists to reach a broader audience, but also tell their story so that others can feel a connection with them!
What what sets me apart from others is that I meet my clients where they are. We live in a difficult time, and knowing how best to use resources can be difficult. I make sure to work with my clients so they can get the message across they need, with the budgets they have.
In addition, I am intentional with everything I put on screen. We live in such a fast paced environment, that it can be hard to slow down. Everything around us is clawing for our attention, and often uses fast paced movement, flashy imagery, and buzzwords to keep us engaged. But oftentimes this leaves us with something that, although cool, has am empty message. Being bold enough to steer clear of this, and having the confidence in your brand and story has become more rare, but increasingly more important. I think that the mindset of everyone is shifting. We want something with depth and meaning now, and I am here to deliver that!

What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
The best lesson I have learned is to always be willing to learn and stay curious! There are always different ways to improve, and being open to these helps me help others. There have been a lot of people in my life I’ve had the blessing of getting to know, and they have opened up new ideas and thought processes of how to produce content better. By staying open minded I can accept different ways of doing things, and find the times that it is right to implement them. This lets me take on new challenges better, and find ways to create content even in difficult scenarios!
