Today we’d like to introduce you to Jami Buckner
Hi Jami, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I knew I wanted to be a makeup artist when I graduated high school, and I told my dad that I wanted to attend a makeup school in Chicago. However, he told me no, that I was going to college, which was already paid for. So, I ended up leaving for college three months later, but I hated it and knew it wasn’t what I wanted to do. While I was there, the girls in my dorm always asked me to do their eyebrows, hair, and makeup. My sophomore year, I got pregnant with my son, and that’s when I started charging the girls for my services. I took it more seriously and practiced every day to improve. I grew up in the YouTube era, and YouTube taught me how to do makeup. I eventually got a job working for MAC Cosmetics, then Lancôme. In 2019, I decided to quit working for others and make makeup my full-time job. From 2019 to now, I’ve been a professional freelance makeup artist, servicing celebrity clients, NFL wives, and more. I’ve even been flown out of the country to showcase my talent. I love what I do and wouldn’t change it at all.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It wasn’t an easy road, but it wasn’t a hard road either. I knew from the very beginning that this was something I wanted to do, and no matter who told me it wasn’t what I was going to do or that maybe this wasn’t the job for me right now, I never stopped dreaming and hoping that one day I’d become a makeup artist, living my dream and doing what I love. That’s why I say it wasn’t a hard road. You just have to have that drive and determination, knowing this is something you want to do, and put forth the effort to see results. I feel like that’s why people go through things and say, ‘Why is this happening to me?’ You just have to fight through that and know that if you’re working towards something, keeping pushing, and keeping your eyes on the finish line, no matter how far away it is, that’s going to get you where you want to be in life. I stand by that.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
As a professional MUA, I specialize in bridal glam and have a reputation for flawless skin application. You can see my latest work in the January 2025 issue of Kentucky Bride. What distinguishes me is my ability to do anyone’s makeup, a skill not everyone in this industry possesses. Although people may underestimate me, my work consistently looks flawless and filtered, both on Instagram and in person.
Before we go, is there anything else you can share with us?
Always believe in yourself and your dreams. I went through many obstacles before I finally got to live my dream, and sometimes that’s what comes with the game… just never give up on yourself. Always look at the finish line, no matter how far away it is.
