Today we’d like to introduce you to Janaysha Garbutt.
Hi Janaysha, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I’ve always been drawn to the beauty industry, starting from the moment I saw my mom and grandmother doing hair out of their homes. Hair to them was a means to an end, but for me, I saw the confidence, beauty, and transformation it inspired in their clients. Seeing the way a hairstyle could completely change how someone felt about themselves left a lasting impression on me.
Over the years, I’ve honed my skills in Dallas, Nashville, and Miami, refining my craft behind the chair through assisting, learning from incredible mentors, and dedicating myself to continuous growth. Each city exposed me to different trends, techniques, and perspectives that helped shape me into the stylist I am today.
My passion lies in color and extensions, where I get to blend creativity with technical skill to create customized looks for every client. The journey hasn’t always been easy, but every challenge has strengthened my commitment to this career. Today, my goal is to create an experience where women not only leave loving their hair but feeling more confident, empowered, and beautiful than when they arrived. For me, that’s what this industry has always been about—helping people see the beauty that’s already there.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. One of the biggest challenges I’ve faced throughout my career has been navigating being the only black woman in the room. While those experiences molded me it pushed me to grow, they also came with moments where I felt like I had to work 10 times harder to simply prove myself, find my voice, and trust my abilities even when I didn’t always feel seen or understood.
The beauty industry is incredibly rewarding, but it can also be challenging to navigate spaces where you don’t always see someone who looks like you in leadership positions or behind the chair. Those experiences taught me resilience, confidence, and the importance of staying true to who I am. Instead of allowing those challenges to discourage me, they’ve motivated me to continue growing and creating opportunities for myself those following behind me.
I’ve also had to navigate the realities of building a career from the ground up—assisting for years, moving to new cities, rebuilding my network, and steadily growing my clientele. There were moments of self-doubt and many setbacks along the way, but each challenge strengthened my commitment to this industry.
Looking back, every obstacle has shaped me into the stylist and person I am today. They’ve taught me that success isn’t just about talent; it’s about perseverance, adaptability, and believing in yourself even when the path isn’t always clear.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m a hairstylist specializing in lived-in color, blonding, and luxury hair extensions. I’d say I’m known for creating a diverse, safe, & inclusive environment for my clients. What I’m most proud of is the journey it took to get here. There were many moments where I was the only African American woman in the room, and navigating that came with challenges that tested both my confidence and resilience. Instead of letting those experiences define me, they strengthened my commitment to creating an inclusive, welcoming space where every client feels seen, heard, and valued. I think what sets me apart is the experience I provide. I take the time to educate my clients, collaborate on their goals, and create a look that fits their lifestyle—not just the day they leave the salon. Building relationships with clients is just as important to me as creating beautiful hair.
What matters most to you?
What matters most to me is creating an inclusive and welcoming experience where every client leaves my chair feeling renewed, inspired, and confident. Hair is deeply personal, and I never take for granted that someone chooses to spend their time and place their trust in my hands. Growing up, I often heard comments like, “You have too much hair,” or, “It’s going to cost extra because your hair is so long and thick.” Those experiences stayed with me, and I made a promise that no client of mine would ever feel like a burden or anything less than valued.
