Today we’d like to introduce you to Jasmyn McCalla.
Hi Jasmyn, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I am originally from Tampa, Florida. I’ve been living in Nashville since 2019 after moving here for a job. Since then, I have worked to pursue a creative outlet while still balancing my full-time career as an attorney.
I have always been an introvert and an observer of people. I always find that you can learn the most about someone by just observing. In my professional career, I am also responsible for listening and solving peoples’ problems. Photography was a natural transition for me to capture someone in an environment where they feel comfortable and at peace while simply existing in that world.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Between moving to a state where I knew no one and then moving to a brand-new city right at the start of a pandemic, this has not been an easy few years. However, I am very aware of the privilege and support I have that many others do not. I am less aware of the “struggles” and “obstacles” I have encountered because—despite these challenges—I have achieved every goal and dream that I set out to conquer. The road has been filled with potholes and valleys, but why dwell on what made me stronger?
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
By day, I am an attorney at one of the oldest law firms in Nashville. I specialize in employment law and workers’ compensation.
By night (and on the weekends), I am a portrait photographer capturing people and families in their strongest and most beautiful moments.
I am most proud of my ability to use my research and observation skills as an attorney to make sure that my subject is placed in a setting where they will feel the strongest. Whether that’s a gym or the middle of a library, my goal is to capture them where they feel the most in tune with themselves.
Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
I feel my stubbornness has been most successful to my success. Both my friends and family know that once I have my mindset on something, there is nothing that will stop me from getting it done. While I’m sure sometimes it works to my detriment, I feel that there is always a benefit to seeing your goal and not deviating from that path no matter what.
