Today we’d like to introduce you to Jenny Kidwell.
Hi Jenny, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Music has been my passion for as long as I can remember, and growing up, I never missed a chance to perform in local talent shows and school plays. I had my ultimate lightbulb moment at 14 years old during a concert for country star Jo Dee Messina. She brought me up on stage to sing “I’m Alright” with her, and standing on that stage, I just knew that’s what I wanted to do—it was an absolutely indescribable feeling.
I have a deep passion for Jesus and Country Music, and I think it’s incredible how music has the power to affect people and bring them together. After that concert, I wrote my first song and began diving deep into the craft. Ever since I started traveling to Nashville, it feels like everything has perfectly fallen into place. I instantly fell in love with the city’s creative energy. To get connected, I plugged into communities like NSAI and YEP, and I also began messaging and connecting with people on Instagram. I met so many great people through all of these ways, and the right doors just kept opening. I have been blessed with incredible opportunities and built relationships that truly make it feel like this is all meant to be.
I’ve been fortunate to receive mentorship from top industry professionals and songwriters. I continue traveling to Nashville every few months to co-write, network, and play writers’ rounds. I am trusting that the doors will keep opening as I work towards my current goals: securing a publishing deal within the next couple of years and ultimately becoming a touring artist.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has definitely not been a smooth road, and I have had to navigate several unique challenges. Living in eastern North Carolina means being far from Nashville. While I can do a lot of things virtually, not being in the city full-time creates a barrier to opportunities. There is a certain kind of magic that happens when you are physically in Nashville, and you really have to be there for things to happen organically.
Additionally, having recently turned 17, trying to break into the music industry as a teenager comes with its own difficulties. While most people have been incredibly kind, friendly, and willing to help, it can sometimes be hard to be taken seriously at my age. Learning to navigate a high-stress industry that I knew absolutely nothing about just a few years ago has been a major learning curve.
However, I am extremely persistent, and I will continue to work hard and prove myself. Despite the obstacles, I still feel that the right things are placed directly in front of me exactly when they are supposed to be. It has been so incredible to watch everything unfold.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a songwriter, singer, musician, and artist who specializes in connecting with people—whether I’m networking off-stage or engaging an audience from the spotlight. I am naturally outgoing and thrive on crowd interaction, but what truly sets me apart is my old soul. Even at 17, I fit seamlessly into the dynamics of the Nashville music scene. Being around older industry professionals and members just feels like home to me; I have a natural capacity to form genuine friendships and deep connections with people much older than myself. This maturity heavily influences my songwriting, allowing me to bring a sense of deep thinking and perspective to the stories I tell. Ultimately, I am most proud of my persistence and tenacious personality. I am incredibly proud of how I continue to show up, face every challenge head-on, and refuse to back down. In fact, people who have met me or know me have always told me that my drive is exactly what sticks out most about me, proving that my determination truly matches the maturity of my music.
Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
What makes me happiest is the magic of creating something out of nothing. There is an incredible feeling when you walk into a room with just a small hook idea, collaborate with people you barely know, and walk out with a complete song that everyone loves. Having an old soul, I have always felt different from others my age. However, through the music community, I feel like I have truly found my people. It makes me so happy because, for the first time, I feel completely included.
The songwriting process proves that music is entirely welcoming. No matter your background, where you come from, or who you are, you can find common ground and connect deeply over a shared song.
Nashville as a whole brings me so much joy. I absolutely love the city’s atmosphere, the vibrant community, and the endless creativity that fills the air. Beyond the music itself, I am incredibly happy and grateful for the lifelong friends and meaningful relationships I’ve made through this journey. Being surrounded by people who share that same creative heart is exactly where I feel happiest.
