Daily Inspiration: Meet Joel Gibson Jr.

Today we’d like to introduce you to Joel Gibson Jr. 

Hi Joel, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
We started this musical journey in 2017 and quickly grew into the premier solo acoustic Country & Rock act in the area. Due to the demand for our original music, we released our first solo acoustic EP “Here Up North” in 2017, followed by our first full-band LP in 2019. In 2020 where the majority of live music came to a halt, we were able to play 154 shows because we chose to think outside the box and created the “Tailgate Tour”. This brought our solo acoustic show to backyards, driveways & properties around the region for socially distanced private concerts. The “Tailgate Tour” was nominated and won Best of Kitsap for “Best Outdoor Concert” and “Best Annual Festival”. Following the enormous success of the tour, we decided to do “Anchors Down”. We played two shows on the water to over 100 boats, kayaks & paddleboards! In addition, we started a livestream called “Couch Concert” that draws in viewers from all over the world. The community we created is like a family, where everyone genuinely loves music, and even in a virtual environment interact with each other as friends even though many have never met in person. In 2021, we recorded our latest album, “Small Town Truth” at the world-renowned Robert Lang Studios in Shoreline, Washington. With the release of “Small Town Truth”, we now have 31 original songs streaming on all major music platforms. To be honest, it’s been a whirlwind averaging 130 shows a year and hitting our 500th show in less than 4 1/2 years. We are hitting the road in 2022, building our fanbase and spreading our music across the nation with shows in Arizona, Oregon, Wyoming, Texas, Tennessee, Florida, and the US Virgin Islands! 

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
No. In this industry, it can be cutthroat when it comes to building your brand and gaining the respect and camaraderie from your peers. I am a proponent for healthy competition that elevates each artist to reach their maximum potential. Unfortunately, this isn’t often reciprocated due to pretentious attitudes rooted in a common theory that those that have been “at it” longer are more deserving of opportunities and promoted exposure. This has been our primary “bump” along this journey because at my core, I am a songwriter and value the relationships I have built with my fans and venues that believe in our music. Having the drive and work ethic to chase a dream while working a full-time job is something I take a lot of pride in. At the end of the day, I will not be outworked. I am taking the old-school approach, putting in the work, and growing our brand with professional integrity and unwavering tenacity. So, I will continue to take challenges head-on, learn as we go, and enjoy this musical journey that we are blessed to be on.

Joel Gibson Jr. Music, LLC is a unique brand that my Wife/Manager and I have built into an ever-expanding brand that writes, produces, promotes, and publishes our original music. We specialize in a one-of-a-kind intimate, energetic solo acoustic performances, as well as a genre-spanning live band shows that sets us apart from other conventional musical acts. We are proud of what we have built-in such a short amount of time, and are continually growing our brand and fanbase through our live shows and online presence. Based solely on our current demand, professionalism, unwavering fan support, and successful and expansive online store, our brand is virtually unparalleled for an independent artist. Especially when you are a two-person team, balancing family life and running a successful business. We’re truly working our asses off to promote the brand and music, and remaining optimistic that the right entity will recognize what we are building and take interest in taking us to the next level. 

The crisis has affected us all in different ways. How has it affected you and any important lessons or epiphanies you can share with us?
We learned innovation was key! I’m not sure how many shows any other artist did during 2020, but between our Tailgate Tour, Anchors Down, and Couch Concerts, we did 154 shows! Our fanbase grew exponentially, and we are extremely grateful and proud of that.
