Today we’d like to introduce you to John Gibson. Them and their team share their story with us below:
John Gibson is a former competition team member at VALKO BJJ in Chicago, IL. Declared a ward of the state at the age of 5, John grew up in, and later “aged out” of, the U.S. foster care system (11 homes/2 Group Homes). John reflects on the childhood abuse he survived and the resulting PTSD it caused with positivity and hopefulness that enables him to connect with anyone facing adversity—young or grown—in a sincere and powerful way.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It’s never been easy. But I’ve been very blessed with the amazing mentor spirit from my middle school teacher Mrs. Stockton… By middle school. She tutored me every single day for three years.
I was functionally illiterate a 13 years old in sixth grade. She helped me obtain testing and a diagnosis of dyslexia. I ultimately achieved a college degree. She and I still speak on the phone regularly.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
My primary career is as a Revenue Cycle Management. I work with many large healthcare Institutions.
However, I also am an enthusiastic BJJ hobbyist and have many amazing sponsorship partners such as Under Armour, Reign Energy Drink, & Royal Medical Centers to name a few.
What makes you happy?
Family time. 100%.
We Sacrifice so much of our time and energy to work and other pursuits, We have to remind ourselves of why. My why will always be my family.
