Today we’d like to introduce you to Jonathan Louis.
Hi Jonathan, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My artistic journey began when I was 16 years old at Studio Evi’Danse in Auxerre, France, where I discovered singing, acting and musical theatre. That was the first place where I realized the stage wasn’t simply somewhere to perform—it was where I felt most alive. Looking back, that was the moment a dream quietly began.
I grew up in France and spent part of my childhood in foster care. Because of that experience, art became much more than a passion. Music, theatre and cinema gave me a voice before I truly knew how to express myself. They became a way to understand who I was, process difficult experiences and transform pain into something meaningful.
My artistic journey continued in Paris, where I studied performing arts at IFPRO (Institut de Formation Professionnelle Rick Odums). I had the privilege of being trained by the late American choreographer Rick Odums, who had been trained by Patsy Swayze, the mother of Patrick Swayze, before becoming one of Patrick’s close artistic collaborators. Through him, I learned that performing is not about perfection—it’s about telling the truth through emotion.
Wanting to understand storytelling from every angle, I later studied film production at the CEFPF (Centre Européen de Formation à la Production de Films). Learning both performance and filmmaking allowed me to see stories from both sides of the camera.
Ironically, my career as a recording artist truly began while I was working as an activities coordinator in a nursing home during the COVID-19 pandemic. At a time when many elderly residents were isolated from their families, I wanted to give them a special Christmas gift through music. What started as a simple act of kindness unexpectedly changed the direction of my life.
Soon afterward, my song “Éprouvant Amour,” produced at Studio MMTP, was pre-selected through Groover’s official call for France Télévisions’ Eurovision France 2022 selection, giving me my first national recognition as an artist.
The journey then expanded internationally. My work was recognized by the International Songwriting Competition (ISC) in Nashville, where “Éprouvant Amour” was recognized in the Vocal Performance category and “D’un père à son fils” in the Adult Album Alternative category. My song “Fiertés” also became a semi-finalist in the Unsigned Only Music Competition, one of the world’s leading competitions dedicated to independent artists.
In 2023, I released my debut EP, “Racine,” produced by Thomas Monica and mixed by acclaimed British producer Ian Caple. The project represented my roots—both artistically and personally.
As I evolved, I felt those songs had evolved with me. Rather than simply moving on to new music, I chose to revisit my first EP and reinvent it under a new title: “Renaissance.” Inspired by artists who have reclaimed and re-recorded their own work, such as Taylor Swift, I wanted to give these songs a new life with greater artistic maturity and vocal experience. I recorded this new chapter at the Dalida Institute, where I rediscovered each song through the eyes of the person I had become. “Racine” tells the story of where I came from; “Renaissance” tells the story of who I have become.
One of those songs, “Fiertés,” continued its journey internationally, remaining in the Top 50 of RedLine Radio in Lausanne, Switzerland, for more than 38 consecutive weeks, including several weeks at No. 1. That experience reminded me that honest stories can travel much farther than we sometimes imagine.
Alongside music, I continued building my career in film and television as an actor, assistant director, production coordinator and casting assistant.
One of my television appearances was in the long-running French TV series “Les Mystères de l’Amour,” where I played a fake police officer in Episodes 10 and 11 of Season 29, broadcast on TMC. For American readers, the show is comparable in format to a long-running daytime drama such as “The Young and the Restless.”
I also had the opportunity to work in casting on “Saint Omer,” directed by Alice Diop. The film was selected as France’s official submission for the Academy Awards in the Best International Feature Film category and later reached the Oscars shortlist. Being part of a project that resonated internationally reinforced my belief that authentic stories can transcend borders.
Like many independent artists, my journey has been filled with extraordinary opportunities as well as significant challenges. Rather than hiding those challenges, I chose to make them the heart of my work.
Today, I don’t create music simply to entertain. I create because I believe stories can heal, connect people and inspire hope. Whether through a song, a film or a performance, my goal has always been the same: to make people feel something real.
Looking back, I realize my career has never been about chasing fame. It has always been about staying authentic, telling honest stories and proving that no matter where you come from, your past never has to define your future.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
What have been some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced?
I don’t think anyone’s journey is ever completely smooth, and mine certainly hasn’t been.
Growing up in foster care taught me resilience from an early age. It also taught me that your circumstances don’t have to define your future. Looking back, those experiences gave me the determination to keep moving forward, even when the path seemed uncertain.
Like many independent artists, balancing creativity with everyday responsibilities has been one of my biggest challenges. Throughout my journey, I’ve worked in music, film, television and public service while continuing to invest in my artistic career. There were moments when I wondered whether I could keep pursuing both, but every challenge reminded me why I started creating in the first place.
Financial obstacles have also been part of the journey. Producing music independently means wearing many hats—not only as a songwriter and performer, but also as a producer, project manager and promoter. Every release has required patience, sacrifice and a willingness to keep believing in my work even when immediate results weren’t guaranteed.
One of the hardest lessons I’ve learned is that the creative industry isn’t only about talent—it is also about protecting your work and your rights. Throughout my career, I’ve experienced situations where performances and professional services weren’t paid, forcing me to take legal action to defend my work. Those experiences were emotionally and financially exhausting, but they taught me that artists deserve the same respect and legal protection as any other professional.
Early in my career, I was also involved in a French television production that later became the subject of a highly publicized legal and media controversy. As a young actor, I chose to speak openly about my own professional experience regarding contractual issues and unpaid work. It wasn’t an easy decision, but it reinforced something I still believe today: integrity matters more than staying silent when something isn’t right.
Perhaps that’s why one experience deeply affected me.
In 2023, Canadian singer-songwriter and actress Alexz Johnson, an artist who had inspired me for years, wasn’t paid after her first concert in France. Having experienced similar situations myself, I couldn’t simply stand by.
Together with her fans, we organized support in France. We launched a crowdfunding campaign to hire a lawyer, worked together to pursue legal action and spent nearly two years fighting to recover the money she was owed. Throughout that journey, the support of her producer, Stephen Stohn, was invaluable.
In 2026, we finally succeeded.
That experience reminded me that success isn’t measured only by awards or applause. Sometimes it’s measured by standing beside someone when they need you the most and defending what is right.
Another challenge has been learning not to compare my journey with anyone else’s. Social media often shows only the highlights. Behind every song, every performance and every achievement are countless hours of work, rejection, financial uncertainty and perseverance that people rarely see.
I’ve also learned that recognition doesn’t always come from where you expect it. Some of my songs found recognition internationally before receiving attention in my own country. At first, that was difficult to understand. Today, I see it as proof that authentic stories can resonate beyond borders and languages.
Rather than hiding those struggles, I chose to make them the heart of my music.
My project “Renaissance” reflects that philosophy. It isn’t simply about revisiting earlier songs—it represents rebuilding yourself after every setback, embracing your scars instead of hiding them and understanding that every difficult chapter can become the beginning of something stronger.
Today, I no longer see obstacles as barriers. I see them as opportunities to grow, to become more compassionate and to tell stories that people can genuinely relate to.
At the end of the day, resilience has become my greatest achievement—not because life has been easy, but because I never stopped believing that every challenge could become the beginning of a new chapter.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’ve never wanted to define myself by a single title. I’m a singer-songwriter, actor, filmmaker and storyteller because, to me, they’re all different ways of telling the same thing: human emotions.
As a songwriter, I write about resilience, identity, love, personal growth and the emotions we often struggle to put into words. My songs are inspired by real experiences rather than trends because I believe authenticity creates the deepest connection with an audience.
One of the projects I’m most proud of is my debut EP, “Racine,” produced by Thomas Monica and mixed by acclaimed British producer Ian Caple. The EP represented my roots—both artistically and personally.
As I evolved, I realized those songs had evolved with me. Rather than leaving them behind, I chose to reinterpret them through a new project called “Renaissance,” recorded at the Dalida Institute. Inspired by artists who have reclaimed and re-recorded their own work, such as Taylor Swift, I wanted to revisit these songs with greater artistic maturity, stronger vocal technique and a deeper understanding of who I had become. To me, “Racine” represents where I came from, while “Renaissance” represents who I have become.
Several songs from these projects have received international recognition. “Éprouvant Amour,” produced at Studio MMTP, was pre-selected for Eurovision France 2022 through Groover’s official call before being recognized by the International Songwriting Competition (ISC) in Nashville in the Vocal Performance category. “D’un père à son fils” was recognized in the Adult Album Alternative category at the same competition, while “Fiertés” became a semi-finalist in the Unsigned Only Music Competition. The song also remained in the Top 50 of RedLine Radio in Lausanne, Switzerland, for more than 38 consecutive weeks, including several weeks at No. 1.
Alongside music, I’ve built my career in film and television. I’ve worked as an actor, casting assistant, production coordinator, first assistant director and director of photography.
I appeared in the long-running French television series “Les Mystères de l’Amour,” where I played a fake police officer in Episodes 10 and 11 of Season 29, broadcast on TMC. For American readers, the show can best be described as a French television soap drama similar in format to “The Young and the Restless.”
I also worked on the casting of “Saint Omer,” directed by Alice Diop, which was selected as France’s official submission for the Academy Awards in the Best International Feature Film category and later reached the Oscars shortlist.
More recently, I had the privilege of seeing my name appear in the credits of the short film “À la poursuite de Lellouch,” directed by Guillaume Quetel, where I worked as Production Manager, Cameraman and First Assistant Director. The film was selected for the Off-Courts Trouville Festival, presented during the 2026 Cannes Film Festival, and later broadcast on France Télévisions. Seeing my work recognized in both music and cinema confirmed my desire to continue building bridges between these two artistic worlds.
Today, my biggest ambition is to continue evolving as a filmmaker, and especially as a director.
For the past few years, I’ve been writing my first short film, “Les Accords du Silence,” a deeply personal story inspired by my own life. The screenplay was supported by La Maison du Film through its Parcours Scénario, where it became eligible for the Screenplay Award. I’m currently developing the project through a mentorship with Trégor Cinéma, with the goal of presenting the strongest and most accomplished version possible to film producers.
To me, this project brings together everything I’ve learned throughout my journey—as a songwriter, actor, filmmaker and human being. It isn’t simply a short film. It’s a story about resilience, identity and the possibility of rebuilding yourself after life’s hardest moments.
What probably sets me apart is that I don’t separate music from cinema. Every song begins in my mind like a film scene, and every film I write carries the rhythm of music. Whether I’m writing lyrics, directing actors or building a visual sequence, I’m always searching for the same thing: emotion.
I’m also proud to remain completely independent. Being independent has forced me to learn every aspect of my profession—from writing and production to promotion and distribution. It hasn’t always been the easiest path, but it has allowed me to remain faithful to my artistic vision.
At the heart of everything I create is one simple belief: stories have the power to heal.
Whether someone listens to one of my songs, watches a film I’ve worked on or eventually discovers “Les Accords du Silence,” I hope they leave feeling understood, inspired and a little less alone than they were before.
Because, in the end, I don’t simply create music or films.
I create stories that remind people they are capable of surviving their own.
What do you like and dislike about the city?
Although I don’t live in Nashville, the city already holds a special place in my journey. Through the International Songwriting Competition, Nashville became much more than a name on a map—it became a symbol of artistic excellence and a place where songwriters from all over the world are celebrated.
What I admire most about Nashville is its deep respect for songwriting. Whether you’re an emerging independent artist or an established musician, there seems to be a genuine appreciation for authentic storytelling. As someone who writes songs inspired by real life and human emotions, that’s incredibly inspiring to me.
I also admire the city’s creative community. Nashville has built an international reputation by bringing together musicians, filmmakers, producers and storytellers who support one another. That’s the kind of artistic environment I hope to experience more in the future.
Since I don’t know the city well enough to criticize it fairly, I wouldn’t say there’s anything I dislike. Like any major city, I’m sure it has its own challenges, but I’d rather discover them through my own experiences than rely on assumptions.
I sincerely hope to visit Nashville one day—not only to perform my music, but also to meet other artists, collaborate, learn and continue growing both as a songwriter and as a filmmaker. It would feel like returning to a place that has already played an important role in my artistic journey.
