Today we’d like to introduce you to Josh Gilmore.
Josh, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My journey into the travel industry really grew out of something I’ve always enjoyed—helping people plan experiences they’ll remember. I’ve always been someone who pays attention to the details, researches the options, and tries to find that perfect balance between what someone dreams about doing and what actually works for their budget and lifestyle.
That interest eventually led me to become a travel advisor with Dream Vacations. What started as a passion for travel and planning has grown into an opportunity to help other people experience destinations, cruises, resorts, and vacations they may have once thought were out of reach.
One of the things I enjoy most is getting to know my clients beyond simply asking where they want to go. I want to know what they want the trip to feel like. Some people want relaxation, others want adventure, and some are celebrating a milestone they’ll only experience once in their lives. Understanding that makes it possible for me to create something much more personal than a standard itinerary.
Along the way, I’ve continued learning the industry, building relationships, researching destinations, and expanding my knowledge of cruises, resorts, and different styles of travel. I’ve learned that being a great travel advisor isn’t just about making reservations—it’s about being someone your clients can trust before, during, and after their trip.
Today, I’m excited to continue growing my travel business, building long-term relationships with my clients, and helping more people turn the trips they’ve been talking about taking “someday” into actual memories.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It definitely hasn’t always been a smooth road, but I think that’s part of what makes the journey worthwhile. One of the biggest challenges has been learning how to build a business and establish yourself in an industry where travelers have more options than ever before. With so much information available online, you have to show people the value of having a real person in their corner who understands their needs and is there when things don’t go according to plan.
There’s also a tremendous amount to learn in the travel industry. Destinations, cruise lines, resorts, promotions, policies, and travel requirements are constantly changing, so staying educated and informed is an ongoing commitment.
Balancing travel advising with the other responsibilities in my life has also taught me a lot about time management, patience, and persistence. There have certainly been challenges and learning experiences along the way, but each one has helped me become more knowledgeable and confident in what I can offer my clients.
Ultimately, those challenges have reinforced why I enjoy doing this. Travel is incredibly personal, and being trusted with someone’s vacation, honeymoon, family trip, or once-in-a-lifetime experience is something I take seriously. The challenges have made the successes that much more rewarding.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m a travel advisor with Dream Vacations, and basically my job is to take what someone has in their head for their perfect vacation and figure out how to make it happen. I work with cruises, resorts, destination vacations, group trips, and special occasions, but I really enjoy putting together trips that are more than just picking a hotel and booking a flight.
I’m a big researcher and I pay attention to the details. If somebody tells me where they want to go, I’m probably going to research everything I can about it. I want to know the best options, what’s actually worth the money, what to avoid, and what could make their trip better. I’m also not afraid to tell someone if I think there’s a better option for them.
I think what sets me apart is that I genuinely care about the trip after it’s booked. I don’t want to just take your payment, send you a confirmation, and disappear. If you have questions, I’m there. If something changes, I’m going to help you figure it out. And if I see something that could make your vacation better, I’m going to tell you about it.
What I’m most proud of is building that trust with people. When somebody comes back and asks me to plan another trip, or sends a friend or family member to me, that means a lot. There are a million places online where you can book a vacation yourself, so if someone chooses to trust me with their time, money, and memories, I take that seriously.
For me, it’s really simple: I want you to have an amazing trip, and I want the planning part to be as easy and stress-free as I can make it.
Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
For me, the biggest thing has honestly been word of mouth and just getting out there and meeting people. Friends recommending me to other friends, family members, or people they know has been one of the best ways I’ve been able to make connections and grow my business.
I also think there’s still a lot of value in actually meeting people in person. Whether I’m at a gathering, restaurant, event, or just out somewhere talking to people, travel naturally comes up in conversation. Once people find out I’m a travel advisor, they usually have questions or start telling me about a trip they’ve been wanting to take, and that opens the door to building a relationship.
As far as finding a mentor, I think the same idea applies. Get out there, talk to people, ask questions, and don’t be afraid to learn from someone who has more experience than you. Some of the best connections happen naturally when you’re genuinely interested in what someone does rather than approaching every conversation like a business opportunity.
For me, networking really comes down to relationships. Be yourself, talk to people, listen to them, and make sure they remember you. You never know when a conversation you have today might turn into a client, a referral, or a great connection later on.
