Today we’d like to introduce you to Josh Lovett. They and their team shared their story with us below:
Originating from Zaragoza, Spain, as Joshua Ray Lovett, my artistic vision is colored by my diverse Filipino and African-American heritage. Beyond music, my storytelling passion extends across film direction, screenwriting, and production.
Teaming up with Royce Massengill in Tullahoma, TN, we founded Face The Troof Media, a thriving hub for media arts. Our reach extends further through the creation of the engaging podcast “Clean Cut Conversations.” This platform aims to unify people, particularly Black men, sparking positive societal changes while addressing the complexities of Southern culture that impede progress.
Yet, this journey is multifaceted. Collaborations with industry giants—Soulja Boy, CEO Miami Mike Palm Tree Entertainment, Jelly Roll—have embellished our path, infusing our narrative with star-studded dimensions.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Before embarking on my media journey, a life-altering burn injury shaped my existence, both physically and socially.
Concealing those scars became routine, almost casting them as a curse rather than a blessing. Yet, mastering this camouflage inadvertently honed my digital artistry. Across films, photography, or any visual creation, this experience refined my precision and attention to detail, propelling my art to new heights.
The struggles I faced, predominantly rooted in racial challenges rather than artistic ones, stemmed from the glaring lack of diversity in Middle Tennessee during that period. Venturing beyond hip-hop to shoot and craft visuals for diverse music genres brought immense pressure. Despite a track record of producing top-tier music videos and films showcased on TV networks, doubts about our abilities persisted.
Simultaneously, coping with financial constraints forced innovation, drawing from skills cultivated during past labor-intensive construction work. Hardware stores became vital. Through resourcefulness with materials like PVC and metal, we broke barriers, ensuring project excellence and delivering precisely what clients desired.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I see myself as a multimedia artist, delving into various realms of media art, from film and television direction, screenwriting, and production to music and visual arts. Within the film sphere, I’ve gained recognition as an award-winning horror director through projects like “The Helmet” and “The Hit List,” part of a short film series.
My involvement in the music world includes assisting in music and video development for rising Nashville talent Marcus Pendleton, a standout finalist on the ABC Boy Band show. My diverse skill set allows me to operate at a commercial standard, achieving results that often appear as if done with a high-budget approach. However, my belief lies in leveraging creative skill and practicality, eschewing high-budget extravagance.
What sets me apart is my ability to efficiently collaborate with a media team, adeptly handling and resolving issues. This proficiency stems from hands-on experience across various roles in the industry, allowing me to troubleshoot effectively and approach projects with a unique perspective.
What does success mean to you?
Success, for me, arrives when satisfaction aligns with the edge of my skill. It’s about entrusting faith as mistakes forge the path.
While I set lofty standards, I’ve come to understand that art is subjective. We draw from inspirations, yet life’s complexity demands a distinct route. Seek inspiration, rely on instincts, and success unfolds uniquely for each creator.
