Daily Inspiration: Meet Josh Sahunta

Today we’d like to introduce you to Josh Sahunta.

Hi Josh, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I’ve been a full-time musician now for the past 5 years and I’ve overcome a significant degree of trials to get here. I grew up in a home that didn’t support music as being a viable career path. I always faced backlash and intense opposition from my parents every time I so much as brought up the idea of pursuing music as anything more than a hobby.

I went to university from 2012-2017, straight out of high school. I studied psychology and graduated with a Bachelors degree in 2017. During that time, I was also working on my sophomore album “Dissonance”, which I also released in 2017.

From that point on, I worked full-time as a therapeutic assistant, and gradually found that I was becoming increasingly burned out from that job. I had very little energy or desire left to create music while I worked at this job.

I eventually quit that job and worked as a waiter part time, while I tried to make a more viable income from music.

The 2020 pandemic forced me into a situation where I was laid off from my restaurant job and had no choice but to put my full time and energy into music. I began producing music for other artists during this time, as the closure of all the major studios in town created a surge of artists who were looking for a place to have their songs recorded. Because I had a home studio, I was able to remain open and benefit from the closure of all of these other studios.

I also got into the sync world during the pandemic and was given opportunities to create music for use in various Netflix shows. I have since made music for shows such as “Love is Blind”, “Love Island”, “Perfect Match”, “Too Hot to Handle”, “The Glory”, and many more.

Since 2020, I’ve had a thriving music career and have recently gotten the opportunity to move to Nashville and pursue my career more seriously there.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It definitely has been a difficult journey so far, but a very worthwhile one. The greatest obstacle I had to overcome was getting through the resistance my parents had to my pursuit of music as a career. That obstacle has left me with a great deal of insecurity that I still deal with today. Music is also a very unstable career and this has also been quite difficult to navigate at times. Some months have been amazing, and some months, I would have been lucky to make any money at all. The consistency has been increasing over time thankfully, but it is still something I have to be very mindful of when I consider spending money where I don’t necessarily need to.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m best known for being very successful as a fully independent artist. I’ve never been signed, and I’ve created a solid income stream completely on my own. I’ve had my original music used in dozens of huge TV series, and I even got myself a JUNO Nomination last year for an album that I wrote and produced largely by myself.

What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
I feel like the rise of AI is going to be an interesting thing to see. I feel like there is a high chance that it will negatively impact songwriters and producers especially in some way, but it will be interesting to see exactly what this looks like.
