Today we’d like to introduce you to Kelly Davis.
Hi Kelly, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
In the spring of 2020, I was a newly minted stay-at-home mom facing lockdown in a small apartment with a very rambunctious toddler (my sweet Connor). We were desperate to get outdoors and do some exploring, but with a two-year-old, preparation is key. It felt like I was always missing something– always wishing I had brought different supplies or known more information ahead of time. After a particularly dramatic outing (involving a potty-training toddler & a hiking trail with no restroom), I told a friend, “I just wish someone would list of all the stuff you SHOULD KNOW before visiting these places!” After a beat, she said, “Then you do it.”
I didn’t have much experience with Instagram, but it seemed like the most natural platform for what I was envisioning. I wanted my posts to be predominantly visual: lots of pictures followed by bulleted, easy-to-read notes.
I didn’t have any expectations for the account. I figured it would just be a nice journal of our adventures and maybe be helpful for the few local friends I had. I have been in a constant state of SHOCK over how it has grown over the past three years.
Truly the best part of it all has been creating togetherness and community. Parenting can be so incredibly lonely, and the pandemic really highlighted this. I want to make it easier for families to visit new places and hopefully build meaningful connections while doing so.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Growing the technology side of things has been challenging, and somehow everything seems to happen at the same time. For example, when I wanted to start offering items for sale, I realized I needed a website, an e-commerce account, a blog, a PO Box, and a pre-paid shipping plan all at the same time. Thankfully Nashville is full of fantastic small business owners who are always willing to teach you what they know. Little by little, I’ve pieced together all these parts of Frecklefaced Adventures, but there has definitely been a huge learning curve.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am the creator of Frecklefaced Adventures which is a new take on parenting blogs. I showcase local kid-friendly outings in the Nashville area and share detailed reviews of each place, giving an honest view of both the highlights and challenges of the location. I look at places all over middle TN (from Lewisburg all the way to Clarksville, Christiana to Lebanon), so all corners of Nashville are represented. I also create free guides and resources– like my twice-yearly roundup of all the consignment sales or my expansive guide to summer camps in the area. I also host monthly meetups and playdates for families, and I keep track of all the special events in our area on my Local Event Calendar.
Most notably, I created the Nashville Adventure Pack. It’s essentially a deck of cards where each card represents a local kid-friendly outing. Over 40 businesses sponsored discount codes and incentives for the cards. For example families with the Nashville Adventure Pack can get 50% off their play pass at Kidsville Indoor Playground, or BOGO ice cream cones at KOKOS. There is even an interactive Google Map that pulls up all the destinations from the Adventure Pack so that no matter where you are, you can easily find a family-friendly outing nearby. The best part of the Nashville Adventure Pack is that each sale contributes a donation to By Faith Farm, a local charity farm that grows organic produce to give away to local families in need. In 2022, Laura Hartley from TN Littles collaborated with me to create a Restaurant Adventure Pack, which features over 35 family-friendly restaurants across the Nashville area. It’s a phenomenal resource and the perfect compliment to the original set.
