Today we’d like to introduce you to Kevin Mahoney.
Hi Kevin, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I got started in music because I was drawn to songwriting as a way to tell honest stories about life. Rather than chasing trends, I gravitated toward artists whose lyrics carried emotional weight and whose songs stayed with people long after the performance. Over time, music became more than a hobby—it became a lifelong creative pursuit.
Over the past two decades, I’ve developed into a multi-instrumentalist, learning to play eight instruments while refining a distinctive acoustic style. My performances are built around expressive vocals and a percussive approach to guitar playing that blends elements of folk, rock, soul, Americana, and folk-funk.
As my songwriting matured, I’ve focused on themes of hope, resilience, redemption, and the complexity of everyday life. These qualities have become central to my identity as a songwriter,

Outside of recording, I’ve built a reputation as a live performer, appearing in theaters, listening rooms, clubs, and venues throughout Nashville, Knoxville, Chattanooga, New York, and the Tri-Cities region. My performances emphasize storytelling and connection, creating an intimate experience even on larger stages.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It hasn’t been a smooth road. Like many independent artists, I’ve spent years balancing a successful career with an unwavering commitment to music. While others were winding down after work, I was writing songs, rehearsing, recording, and traveling to performances. Success didn’t arrive overnight—it came one song, one stage, and one audience at a time.
There were moments of uncertainty, countless hours behind the scenes, and the challenge of building a career without shortcuts. Those experiences became the foundation of my songwriting. Rather than writing about perfect endings, I write about real life—the setbacks, the hope, the lessons learned, and the belief that the long road often leads to the most meaningful destinations.
Today, that journey is reflected in every performance. My hope is that my songs remind listeners that growth isn’t measured by where you’ve arrived, but by who you’ve become along the way.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Over the past 20 years, I’ve been fortunate to receive recognition as a finalist in the World Songwriting Awards, earn a Songwriter of the Year nomination at the Josie Music Awards held at the Grand Ole Opry, and have my music featured on FM radio, television, and in Relix magazine’s “Artists on the Rise.” Those accomplishments are deeply meaningful, but what I’m most proud of is hearing that one of my songs helped someone through a difficult season or reminded them they weren’t alone. That’s why I write.
Running Foggy Hill Records has also been one of my greatest accomplishments. Building an independent label has allowed me to create opportunities not only for my own music but for other artists who believe in the power of authentic songwriting. I’ve learned that success isn’t just measured by streams or sales—it’s measured by the relationships you build, the artists you encourage, and the legacy you leave behind.
What sets me apart is that I bring both an artist’s heart and a business leader’s perspective. Alongside my music career, I’ve spent more than two decades leading and growing organizations, building teams, and creating strategies for long-term success. That experience has shaped the way I approach music—with discipline, professionalism, and a commitment to excellence—while never losing sight of the creativity and authenticity that inspired me to pick up a guitar in the first place.
At the end of the day, I want people to remember me not just as someone who wrote songs, but as someone who made a genuine connection, encouraged other artists, and left the world a little better through music.
What were you like growing up?
Growing up, I was curious, driven, and always looking for ways to challenge myself creatively. I’ve always believed that hard work, discipline, and perseverance can take you further than talent alone, and those values have shaped both my life and my music.
One of the biggest influences on me was attending LaSalle Military Academy, where I was a member of the Drum & Bugle Corps. That experience taught me discipline, teamwork, and the importance of striving for excellence. It also deepened my appreciation for music—not just as a form of expression, but as something that requires commitment, practice, and precision. Looking back, many of the lessons I learned there continue to influence the way I approach songwriting, performing, and life. I must thank Charlie King, fellow classmate who was the first one to put a guitar in my hands. I am forever grateful!
Later, at St. Bonaventure University, music became an even bigger part of who I was. Some of my favorite memories are the simplest ones—sitting in the stairwells or in my dorm room with my guitar for hours, learning songs, experimenting with chord progressions, and slowly finding my own voice as a songwriter. Those quiet moments were where I really honed my guitar skills. I wasn’t thinking about awards, albums, or performing on stage. I was simply falling in love with the process of making music.
I grew up believing that every person has a story worth telling, and that belief has become the foundation of my songwriting. I’ve always been drawn to the human side of life—the victories, the disappointments, the relationships, and the moments that shape who we become. Those are the stories I try to capture in my songs.
When I look back, I realize that both LaSalle Military Academy and St. Bonaventure University gave me gifts that continue to influence me today. One taught me discipline and resilience; the other gave me the time and space to discover my musical voice. Together, they helped shape not only the musician I’ve become, but the person I continue to strive to be.
