Today we’d like to introduce you to Kylee Josette
Hi Kylee , thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
From a very young age Ive always had a passion for creating. From entering art projects into the local town and country fair each summer or staying up all night to rearrange my bedroom furniture, Art and creating has followed me through every chapter of life.
More recently my ambition for design has been a driving force over the past few years. It really started when I was in a chapter of self discovery through mental health and queerness. I went from making art for myself or painting sneakers for friends to now interior design, art and creative direction. I never limit myself to projects because I was fortunately born with the how hard can it be gene. So if I don’t know how to do something, I will adapt and make it happen or learn through trial and error.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
No it hasn’t but it never is for any creative. Im still very early in my career, therefore still in the problem solving and learning phase. With this phase comes trial and error through each project but one of the things I struggle with the most is time management. As an artist, I am a videographer, editor for social media, Im the creator of all projects, organizer of my time and I am the biggest advocate for myself through networking. That’s a lot of responsibility for one person to take on. We need to give our creative friends more credit and support them in any way possible, because it’s not easy being all those things wrapped up in one.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
My main focus is Interior Styling and art but I really do love creating in every sense. With Interior design I really love creating spaces that are visually interesting and colorful. Im a true maximalist and love mixing bright color, bold patterns and unique decor together to make a space stand out. I also do commission projects that have consisted of custom painted shoes, abstract art, a custom wood working project and currently, Im working on a creative project for a local musician in Nashville.
I think my design style sets me apart from the other. I love color, vibrancy and uniqueness in a space. I want someone to walk in and see something new with each scan of a room! I think Nashville is perfect for space like that because of the high tourism.
If there’s anything I’m proud of, it’s myself. From a young age I was told doing something creative wasn’t practical and would not give me the financial stability, that a standard corporate job could. For years I believed that, until I moved to Nashville and saw the hustle of other people in creative jobs. I might not be where I want to be in my career but at least I’m going after my passions.
Recently I’ve been leaning into my queer identity and creating art that ties into the religious bonds of being queer and growing up in the church. Its something I’m still developing but would love to expand more on in the future,
Any big plans?
Right now I’m looking forward to building stronger relationships with more artist and other queer creatives. I wanna start collaborating with other artist in the area and really build a community here. Since I am still early in my career, having relationships and learning through my peers is something I think would be really beneficial for my journey!
Im also looking to take on more commission work wether that be through interior design or more custom projects for artists and local businesses.
