Daily Inspiration: Meet Lani Meyer

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lani Meyer.

Hi Lani, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I’ve always had a love for photography for as long as I could remember. I remembered winning a photography contest way back in college for our school newspaper – it was a sunset picture over the mountains and it was my very first photography award. That was a long time ago though and I just got busy with so many things. I was in a corporate job, I did branding and design for work, I traveled to many different places, I got involved in ministry… but I always managed to hold a camera and hide behind the lens even just for fun.

Fast forward to years later – and here I am, in a different country (Nashville, TN, USA but originally from Manila, Philippines) and in a different season of life (married with two kids). My love for photography never left and, being a mom now, truly sparked my passion for it. I just KNEW – that’s it, this is what I want to do. Kids grow up so quickly and I wanted to capture every single milestone and I wanted to do it not just for my own family but for others too. It was daunting to start my photography business but I knew I should just take a leap of faith and not hesitate anymore or doubt myself. I thought, “This is it – it’s now or never. I’m really going to have to do this or I’m gonna go through life without ever having really tried.”

I finally opened my business – Lani Meyer Photography – in September 2021! It was quite a process to get to this point… but, by God’s grace, I’m here!

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
I’ve been doing photography for some time now but it’s really only been 3 months or so since I started my photography business. But just to even get here, I felt that the biggest obstacle was really myself. There’s a lot of fears and self-doubt. There are just so many talented and fabulous photographers all around and I don’t even know where I fit in all that.

There are also other hats I needed to learn – because I wasn’t just a photographer, I was also a stylist, a social media manager, a website creator, and yes, even an entertainer (try entertaining kids while taking photos – it is tough!) amongst other things. Given that I also launched my business in Nashville in September and am still new to the city (we only moved here July of this year), I had zero contacts too. So that was also scary and felt like a big move.

But I’ve learned – and still learning – to just enjoy the process, do what I’m passionate about and not compare against others and instead find inspiration all around me. I’m taking it a day at a time and telling myself that this is my own journey.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m a photographer and my current focus is family photography, although I’ve also done others like couples and maternity. I’m proud of my work because I genuinely care about the families I work with and I put 100% effort into all that I do.

I understand the feeling of wanting to freeze moments so I know how special these photos are to them. It truly is an honor that I get to capture those memories for them and their loved ones. There is a quote that says, “Photography is a way of feeling, of touching, of loving. What you have caught on film is captured forever… it remembers little things, long after you have forgotten everything.”

I’m incredibly thankful to God for giving me the talents He has given me. I was reflecting what my purpose is in all of this and how can I glorify Jesus through my work. And you know, there are so many horrible things happening in the world and you see and hear it everywhere. It’s just so sad and heartbreaking. I want anyone to look at my photos and think that it’s a beautiful world still. I want parents to remember how blessed they are to have their families. I want moms to not forget the amazing miracle when they had their little baby in their womb. The son’s laughter when dad tickles him, the daughter’s look on her face when mom makes a silly face, the way a newly engaged couple would lovingly look at each other… for the big moments, and the small, these are just so priceless and beautiful. My vision is that anyone looking at my photos would see God’s handprints everywhere!
