Today we’d like to introduce you to Lillian Watson.
Hi Lillian, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I got started teaching yoga and meditations with sound baths after seeing how much it helped me heal when I lost my Dad and Grandmother back to back. I wanted to be able to bring that peace to others. I started with taking my 200hr YTT and just having it, and only offering free classes for family and friends. Then I got my 100hr meditation and Yoga Nidra certifications. Again, I did not teach publicly. It wasn’t until a new studio opened that I started to teach publicly classes, and finished my 200hr Meditation certification. I loved teaching. I was teaching 5-8 classes a week. I loved my students. I had gotten my 500hr RYT, Yin 100hr, Prenatal, 100hr kids yoga, chair yoga, etc. But, something was missing. So, I got my Sound Healing Certification. I knew my path was shifting. I opted to start branching out to the community and offering free classes in parks. It’s a no no often in the yoga community to step out and offer free things frequently because it takes away from the studios. But I felt called to take yoga to more people. I did that up to winter. I also started working at The Arts Alliance (a 501c3 in Pleasant View) a few days a week and left the other studio. I wanted to focus on places where I could make a positive impact. Taking a class with me at TAA meant that money was going back to Kids Arts Programs like dance, music, theatre, etc.! It means more than money to me. Then the community centers started reaching out and asking if I would teach for them. This meant that I would be able to bring yoga and meditation to those who could not afford studio prices so I said yes. Now, I do yoga at the community center and TAA. I do offer private classes or group sessions for people to book, and would love to help anyone looking to get one scheduled in the Nashville area. I’m doing a sound bath for Vanderbilt Nurses week actually and am excited about that. For me, providing peace and relaxation to the world is the ultimate gift.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
No it has not. Yoga, though it shouldn’t be, is a very catty world. A lot of drama seems to follow yoga. Especially if you aren’t one who follows western culture of yoga, and tends to lean more towards the peace and love aspect. I think there is plenty of room for the western fitness yoga and for the eastern calming yoga if we could agree to accept that we all have different needs.
There were also the days of low class turn outs for a new studio. Studio owner feuding was fun to be stuck in the middle of. Then the lovely low pay and toilet cleaning. Oh yes, it’s a glorious life. LOL
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a 500hr Registered Yoga Teacher, 300hr Certified Meditation Teacher, and Sound healer. I specialize in Yoga Nidra and Vinyasa Yoga.
I’m most proud of my students when they achieve things they didn’t think they could. Seeing them hold a balance posture means more to me than an award.
I am crazy at times, but I’m also calming. My Yoga Nidra classes are known to help people sleep who haven’t been able to. I’ve been told I have a very calming voice that takes people to another place.
Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
Isn’t it all luck! Luck that a spot was open. Luck that someone liked you enough. Etc. I think it is the universe working.
