Today we’d like to introduce you to Lovesick.
Hi Lovesick, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
We met in 2011 while playing in another band, and from the very beginning we discovered that we shared not only a passion for music but also a deep love for American roots traditions. A few years later, in early 2015, we started what would become Lovesick. At first, it wasn’t meant to be a career move. We simply wanted to spend time together exploring the music we loved most: artists like Chuck Berry, Hank Williams, Bob Wills, and many others who shaped American country, western swing and early rock ‘n’ roll.
We started by playing on the streets of Bologna, busking for anyone willing to stop and listen. Those days taught us a lot. Playing several hours a day, face to face with people, helped us develop our sound, our chemistry and our confidence as performers. Little by little, street performances turned into pub gigs, festivals and eventually international tours.
Over the years, our musical journey has naturally evolved. What began as a duo interpreting traditional songs slowly became a band writing its own music. Today, original songwriting is at the heart of Lovesick, while still carrying the spirit of the music that inspired us from the beginning.
Since then, we’ve been fortunate enough to tour across Europe and the United States, record albums in New Orleans, Los Angeles and, soon, Nashville, collaborate with incredible musicians, and receive a nomination for the 2024 Ameripolitan Music Awards. Every step has opened another door, but what still excites us most is the same thing that brought us together in the first place: standing on stage and playing music we truly believe in.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Not at all. Like most independent bands, we’ve had to build everything one step at a time. Looking back, though, that’s probably one of our biggest strengths. We never skipped any steps. We started busking, then playing small pubs, then clubs, festivals, and eventually touring internationally. Every stage taught us something that we still carry with us today.
From the very beginning, our main focus has always been playing live. We truly believe that’s where a band grows the most. Every show, whether there are twenty people or two thousand, teaches you something about your music, your audience, and yourselves.
Of course, there have been moments of frustration. When you dedicate your life to something and work incredibly hard, it’s natural to hope that one day everything will suddenly take off. That never really happened to us. Instead, we’ve always taken small steps forward. Every year brought something slightly better than the previous one, rather than one huge breakthrough.
But over time we’ve realized that this steady growth has given us something much more valuable: a solid foundation. It made us appreciate every opportunity, every festival, every tour, every album, because we know exactly what it took to get there. Nothing was handed to us, and that’s something we’re genuinely proud of.
Sometimes it’s funny to think that what started with two musicians playing on the streets of Bologna has now taken us to stages across Europe and the United States, with our next album being recorded in Nashville. Looking back, it all makes sense. We wouldn’t change the journey, because every small step brought us exactly where we are today.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Over the past few years, songwriting has become the heart of what we do. While live performance will always be a huge part of Lovesick, we’ve become increasingly focused on writing original songs that feel authentic to us and true to the tradition we love.
English isn’t our first language, so that has been an interesting journey in itself. Paolo has spent many years traveling in the United States, improving his English and immersing himself in American culture. Today, songwriting feels very natural, and we often exchange ideas with American musicians and friends while developing new songs. Paolo writes most of the material, then we refine everything together until it truly feels like a Lovesick song.
We’re especially proud of the new album we recently recorded in Nashville. We genuinely feel that both the songwriting and the production represent another step forward for us. It hasn’t been released yet, as we’re currently looking for the right label and the right moment to introduce it, but we’re incredibly excited about what we’ve created.
Another thing we’re very proud of is our live show. This year we’ve been touring with a full band, adding guitar and drums to the original duo, and it’s brought a new dimension to our concerts. The energy on stage has been incredible, and the response from audiences has exceeded our expectations.
If there’s one thing that sets us apart, we think it’s the connection between us. We’ve been playing together for almost fifteen years, and there’s a kind of communication that doesn’t need words anymore. Whether we’re performing as a duo or with the full band, that musical chemistry is still at the center of everything we do. People often tell us they can feel that connection from the stage, and we believe that’s something you can’t fake or manufacture. It simply comes from years of making music—and life—together.
Any big plans?
We’re really excited about the next chapter. Right now, our biggest goal is to bring our new album to as many people as possible. We truly believe it’s our strongest work so far, both in terms of songwriting and production, and we can’t wait for people to finally hear it.
Touring will always be a huge part of our lives. We’d love to keep taking our music around the world, discovering new audiences and returning to the places that have welcomed us so warmly over the years. We know that organizing international tours isn’t always easy, but it’s one of the most rewarding parts of what we do, and we’re always looking for new opportunities.
At the moment we’re really enjoying performing with our full band. It has brought a new energy to our live show, and it feels like the right direction for this stage of Lovesick. That said, the duo will always be at the heart of everything. Every now and then we still have the chance to play just the two of us, and those concerts have a very special kind of magic. It’s where everything began, and every time we return to that format it reminds us why we started making music together in the first place.
More than anything, we simply hope to keep growing, keep writing songs we’re proud of, and keep sharing them with people. If we can continue doing that, we’ll consider ourselves very lucky.
