Today we’d like to introduce you to Marcellus Hammond
Marcellus, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Man, my journey has been a wild one. Art has always been in me, but I didn’t always know how to use it. I started out just creating—painting what I felt, experimenting, trying to make sense of the world through color and texture. Over time, that turned into something bigger.
My work now is about the struggles we face but don’t always name—identity, resilience, survival. I mix paint with fabric, earth textures, and digital elements because life itself is layered, messy, textured. Every piece I make is a reflection of that.
I’ve had my work shown in galleries, in private collections here and abroad, painted murals, and even brought Augmented Reality into my art, but at the heart of it all, I just want to create things that make people stop, feel, and see themselves differently. I’m still building, still learning, but one thing’s for sure—art is what I’m here to do.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I would say the road hasn’t been smooth, but I know God’s had His hands on me the whole way. The struggles I’ve faced aren’t so different from other artists—finding my voice, juggling life, and pushing through the rejection that comes with putting yourself out there.
Balancing a full-time job while trying to create, grow, and stay inspired? That’s a grind. Then there’s navigating the art world—trying to get your work seen, dealing with the ups and downs of opportunities, and wondering if you’re on the right path. It’s easy to feel like you’re being overlooked, like the work you pour your soul into isn’t always met with the recognition it deserves.
But through all of that, I know I’m in this for the long haul. I believe the work I’m doing matters, and I trust the process. The struggle isn’t a roadblock—it’s part of the journey. Every ‘no’ sharpens the vision. Every challenge builds resilience. And at the end of the day, I create because I have to. The work is bigger than me.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m a painter, mixed media artist, muralist, and digital creator who tells stories through layered textures, bold colors, and unconventional materials like fabric, earth-based elements, and augmented reality. My work explores identity, resilience, and the unseen battles we face, blending the physical with the digital, the past with the present.
What sets me apart? I build my work like a collage of lived experience. Every layer carries meaning—photos, textiles, digital integrations—pulling from history, culture, and personal moments to create something that feels both familiar and untold.
I’m most proud of how my work connects with people. When someone sees themselves in a piece, when it sparks a conversation about struggle, survival, or faith—that’s what keeps me creating. At the end of the day, I want my art to be more than something you look at—I want it to be something you feel.
Also if someone reading this has a story to tell rather, that’s on a wall as a mural on canvas reach out and I’ll help you bring your vision to life.
We’d love to hear about how you think about risk taking?
I’d definitely say I’m a risk-taker. Nothing about my journey has been safe or predictable—I’ve had to bet on myself over and over again.
Moving to a whole new city, away from familiarity, to chase something bigger? Risk. Putting my work out there, knowing that rejection is part of the game? Risk. Pushing the boundaries of art—blending painting with fabric, digital, and AR—knowing some people might not get it at first? Risk.
But I’ve learned that risk and growth go hand in hand. Every leap I’ve taken has stretched me, challenged me, and led to something greater. The biggest risk isn’t failing—it’s staying comfortable. And I’m not here for comfort. I’m here to create, evolve, and keep pushing forward.
