Today we’d like to introduce you to Marcus Meneese Sr..
Hi Marcus, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
My name is Marcus Meneese Sr., and I am the Founder and Executive Director of Stronger Than My Father, Inc., a Nashville-based nonprofit organization dedicated to empowering youth and strengthening families through mentorship, leadership development, and educational support.
My passion for serving young people began more than 23 years ago when I started working with youth in my local community. Over the years, I saw firsthand the challenges many young men faced, especially those growing up without consistent positive male role models. As someone who understands the importance of guidance, encouragement, and community support, I felt called to make a difference.
In 2013, I founded Stronger Than My Father with a vision of helping young people discover and fulfill their God-given purpose. What started as a small grassroots effort has grown into a thriving organization that serves youth and families throughout Middle Tennessee. Along the way, we launched programs such as the Hope Leadership Academy, which served more than 1,000 elementary students through after-school and summer programming.
Today, our flagship Stronger Sons Mentorship Program provides both in-school and weekend mentoring opportunities for boys ages 9–17. We focus on character development, leadership, career exploration, emotional well-being, and helping young men build confidence and positive relationships. We have also expanded our impact through entrepreneurship camps, leadership development programs, and parent engagement initiatives such as Moms with Purpose.
My journey has not always been easy. Building a nonprofit requires faith, perseverance, and a willingness to overcome obstacles. There have been challenges with funding, growth, and balancing family and ministry, but every success story reminds me why this work matters. Seeing young people graduate, improve academically, develop leadership skills, and believe in themselves makes every challenge worthwhile.
Today, Stronger Than My Father continues to grow through partnerships with schools, businesses, churches, and community leaders who share our commitment to creating brighter futures for youth. I remain passionate about mentoring the next generation and helping young people become stronger leaders, stronger students, and stronger individuals than the generations before them.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It definitely has not been a smooth road. Like many nonprofit founders, one of the biggest challenges has been securing consistent funding while trying to grow programs and increase our impact. There have been times when I had to wear multiple hats—executive director, fundraiser, mentor, program coordinator, and even event planner—all at the same time.
Another challenge has been building community awareness. When you start a nonprofit, people don’t automatically know who you are or understand your mission. It takes years of networking, relationship-building, and proving your value to schools, businesses, churches, and potential donors.
There have also been personal sacrifices along the way. As a husband, father, and nonprofit leader, balancing family life, work responsibilities, and ministry can be difficult. There were moments when I questioned whether I was making enough progress, but I never lost sight of why I started.
What has kept me going are the young people and families we serve. Seeing a student improve academically, develop confidence, or discover a new purpose reminds me that the work is making a difference. Every obstacle has taught me valuable lessons about perseverance, leadership, and faith.
Looking back, the challenges have actually helped shape Stronger Than My Father into the organization it is today. They have made us stronger, more resilient, and more committed to serving the next generation.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am the Founder and Executive Director of Stronger Than My Father, Inc., a Nashville-based nonprofit organization focused on mentoring youth, strengthening families, and developing future leaders. For more than 13 years, I have dedicated my career to helping young people discover their purpose, build confidence, and develop the skills needed to succeed in life.
Our organization specializes in group mentoring, leadership development, character education, and youth empowerment. Through programs such as our Stronger Sons In-School Mentorship Program, Weekend Mentorship Program, Entrepreneurship and Leadership Development Summer Camp, and Moms with Purpose parent support group, we provide youth and families with practical tools, encouragement, and opportunities to grow.
I am probably best known for my passion for mentoring young men and creating meaningful partnerships between schools, businesses, churches, and community leaders. I believe that when communities work together, we can create life-changing opportunities for young people.
What I am most proud of is the impact we have made over the years. Through Stronger Than My Father and our previous Hope Leadership Academy program, we have positively impacted more than 1,000 young people and their families. Some of the students we worked with years ago are now graduating, pursuing careers, and becoming leaders in their own communities.
What sets us apart is our focus on relationships and long-term impact. We don’t simply offer programs—we build connections. Our mentors invest their time, knowledge, and life experiences into the next generation. We also combine mentorship with leadership development, career exploration, entrepreneurship, and family engagement to support the whole child.
At the end of the day, our goal is simple: to help young people become stronger leaders, stronger students, stronger family members, and ultimately stronger than the challenges they face. Seeing that transformation take place is what motivates me every day.
How do you think about luck?
I don’t think of my journey as being driven by luck as much as it has been driven by faith, hard work, and the support of others. That said, I have certainly been blessed with opportunities and relationships that have helped shape both my life and Stronger Than My Father.
Along the way, I’ve met incredible mentors, community leaders, school partners, donors, and volunteers who believed in our mission and opened doors that I could not have opened on my own. Some people might call that good luck, but I see it as God’s favor and the result of consistently showing up, serving others, and building genuine relationships.
Of course, there have also been setbacks. We have experienced funding challenges, program changes, and moments when things didn’t go according to plan. At the time, those situations felt like bad luck, but looking back, many of them taught valuable lessons that helped us become a stronger organization.
One thing I’ve learned is that opportunities often come disguised as challenges. The key is being prepared, staying persistent, and continuing to move forward even when things don’t happen as quickly as you’d like.
Today, I am grateful for every opportunity, every lesson, and every person who has been part of this journey. Each has played an important role in helping Stronger Than My Father impact the lives of young people and families throughout our community.
