Today we’d like to introduce you to Maria Sesay.
Hi Maria, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
The simplest answer to both how I started and how I got to where I am today is merely through prayer and hard work. I have always had a courageous and fearless spirit. My parents played a vital role as I grew up seeing my parents in the forefront. I will say I am a mix of them both: My father was a preacher, and my mother loved to sing. They, too, had gifts of using their voices in different ways. Somehow, I found my own unique voice between the two of them. My voice is a gift from God that I have been able to use in various ways on various platform; from singing to interviewing to hosting and more!
I received my Bachelors degree in Mass Communication, but I knew I did not want to limit my works to the local news or corporate communications. I wanted an occupation that allowed me to fully embrace who I am while still utilizing my gifts and talents. Being of Sierra Leonean descent, I am blessed to have been raised bi-culturally. I always have found myself incorporating my culture into what I do. I literally prayed to fully use my gifts for a purpose greater than myself. Thankfully, many opportunities have presented themselves, and I have been able to create my own lane. I would not say that I can be categorized into one box. This inspired me to create THE MARIA brand. I am able to do what I love most.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Every road has its challenges. I made a promise to myself to NEVER GIVE UP! Consistency is key, and people notice whether they are vocal about it or not. I use every “no” as an opportunity to reevaluate and continue; even rebrand at times.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a media correspondent and event host. My works range from Event Hosting, Speaking Engagements, Panelist, and Brand Influencer.
I am most proud of hosting the Afrobeats Festival in Nashville, TN. I have had several media opportunities around the USA. To be able to headline in my own hometown was very honorable.
What sets me apart is my ability to connect with a diverse audience. I do not limit myself to one particular subject and/or group of people. I always find a common ground to connect well with others. I have been fortunate to participate in media productions while being true to myself and embracing my culture.
Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
My family and community are my biggest supporters. I am forever grateful for them. They keep me uplifted. My biggest influencers are my parents, Dr. Bukky George-Taylor, Dr. Harriet Vaughn-Wallace, Michael Jackson and Princess Diana.
