Daily Inspiration: Meet Marissa J

Today we’d like to introduce you to Marissa J.

Hi Marissa, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
A few years ago, I would write entire novels on Facebook about geopolitics and entertainment news. My niece called to tell me that I need to start a podcast because what I write is way too long for Facebook. After nursing my pride for a bit, I started The Queen’s Table. It was fun but it gradually started to feel like therapy for me. Being able to discuss what I want and essentially, when I want, after having been silenced for so long in an abusive relationship, podcasting became such an invaluable thing for me.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The road has definitely been rocky but I’ve loved every step of this journey! I like to think of my problems as a challenge, not a detriment. I am by no means a producer, sound engineer, marketing manager, or any of that so I’ve had to guess my way around podcasting but I really do embrace every part of this, even the challenges!

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
My podcast has always been a bit eclectic and random but I think that’s the fun in the show. Yes, The Queen’s Table is a pro-Black women’s podcast but anyone can tune in because of the cast topics I cover. It’s never boring with interviews, miniseries, reviews, and rants, there’s always something at The Table!

What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
The most important lessons I’ve learned were to not take myself too seriously and stay as consistent as possible. Those two lessons can be implemented in any aspect of life. When I first started to gain subscribers, I tried to go all out because that’s what I thought people wanted and it was really stressful. But the moment I let go and stopped being what I thought everyone wanted me to be, that’s when I realized I was already doing what works. And as far as staying consistent, well I’m still working on that but it is one of the most valuable lessons I’ve learned!
