Daily Inspiration: Meet Megan York, Kristen Nelson, Hilarie Zimbicki and Zoey Zimbicki

Today we’d like to introduce you to Megan York, Kristen Nelson, Hilarie Zimbicki and Zoey Zimbicki. Them and their team share their story with us below:

Sisters Not Saints Podcast is the culmination of two sets of sisters and close friends whose friendship and sisterhood blossomed over the pandemic era in Nashville. As the world huddled up in their respective pods and practiced social distancing, we noticed two things: people turned to podcasts as an escape and a way to stay connected to world events and that, culturally, people missed lighthearted, fun conversations with their close friend groups. The world quickly found solutions for various social events — hello, drive-by birthday parties, or zoom baby showers and holiday meals. It became harder, however, to feel connected to the hundreds of small daily exchanges, conversations, and debates you may have with your coworkers or best friends.

Increasingly, we found that our adult friends were reminiscing about silly things like office gossip, weird things we read on the internet the night before, getting advice from coworkers on relationship issues, and strange encounters you may have had with someone in the deli or coffee shop. As your circle changes in your adult years, we also noticed you sometimes encounter problems that you want a fresh take on — not necessarily from a therapist or the same friend group whose advice you can already recite in your head — but from someone who will see it from a neutral, sisterly point of view. Our solution to this? We decided to start a podcast offering unique conversations and advice from the four sisters you’ve always wanted.

Co-hosted by Hilarie Zimbicki and Zoey Zimbicki, sisters-in-law, and Megan York and Kristen Nelson, sisters, the weekly podcast delivers all of the above in an easily digestible, funny format where we discuss anything from weird real-life encounters, cultural phenomenons or pop culture and then move into answering questions our listeners submit for actual advice. We find that we very rarely agree and are not afraid to use our own experiences to duke it out with each other and offer the best possible advice on any topic. Consider us your big sisters for the day!

Each of us brings a very different background and perspective to the podcast, which is where we aim to be as broadly relatable and helpful to any life situation. Most of us are native Nashvillians with strong ties to the city and absolutely love representing the city of Nashville.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Fortunately, we all work well together, so it has been smooth in terms of division of labor and making big decisions.

The biggest challenge we have faced from a general perspective is simply not being professionally trained and having to research and learn about everything from equipment, editing, social media, marketing, promotion, recording, and every piece of podcasting from A to Z on our own.

From a logistics standpoint, Zoey has been working on set in Memphis since we premiered, so we had to adapt pretty immediately and learn how to both zoom her into our recording sessions and ensure the quality of her sound was up to par, while also keeping the magic that we would have if the four of us were in the room together. We are all happy that we adapted quickly and that Zoey will be back home in Nashville to record in person soon.

Aside from that, I think we are still learning how to grow our audience organically, while also balancing real-life responsibilities too.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Our day jobs are pretty diverse — Megan operates the day-to-day and financial aspects of third-generation family business here in Nashville. She is our operational and organization guru, as well as our Editor. You’ll never guess where Megan stands on an issue, as she makes her opinions very clear. Don’t ask her for advice unless you actually want it!

Kristen left corporate America in 2018 where she managed HR and Talent Acquisition teams for over a decade at various large organizations in the Nashville area to become a stay-at-home mom to her three boys. You’ll find her volunteering at schools, toting them around to various activities, running to and from play dates, and keeping a busy household on track. She is often the originator of very weird topics from the internet and her occasional awkward encounters make their way onto the podcast with some regularity.

Hilarie works in education at a well-regarded institution here in Nashville and has taught for many years, in addition to a stretch of time when she was a stay-at-home mom to her children. Hilarie is a master planner and hostess to all the best events. She is our burst of positivity, a great advice-giver, and always tries to see things from both points of view.

Zoey, a native Nashvillian, works in film and television as a Costume Supervisor, so she is frequently away working on set. She’s naturally artistic and also the best “devil’s advocate” in town — she calls us out on anything that needs a reality check, and we love her for it.

We are really proud of our natural chemistry and connection, our genuine interest in the world around us, and driving conversations that will enlighten us while also keeping the mood light.

How do you define success?
Success, to us, is never metrics-driven. Success is not fame or money. Success is the ability to continue doing something you love, something that keeps us connected, something that serves others, even through entertainment or conversation. At the end of the day, I think we would be happy to continue making our podcast, even if no one listened.

We are happy to have a platform — as sisters — where we can discuss anything, look for unique angles and experiences and normalize them or even open very strange topics up for conversation or debate. We don’t get everything right, but we aim to be a safe place to demonstrate compassion, friendship, sisterhood, and real life in a way that is relatable.
