Daily Inspiration: Meet Mekennah Ward

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mekennah Ward

Hi Mekennah, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I grew up in Alaska with two very artistic parents chasing their “American dream”—part ownership of a remote hunting lodge. My childhood was spent immersed in nature, fishing, camping, painting, and capturing moments with disposable cameras, influenced by my mother’s love for photography and my father’s craftsmanship. In fifth grade, my teacher gave me my first real camera, a Canon PowerShot A590, sparking a deeper love for photography. That gift, combined with my upbringing, set me on a trajectory of visual storytelling. Over the past decade, I’ve traveled and lived around the world, refining my skills and deepening my passion for freezing time through photographs. Today, as the owner of Onward Photography Co, I blend artistry, emotion, and experience to craft heirloom imagery. My journey has been one of exploration, but at its core, it has always been about being in the moment and storytelling.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It certainly hasn’t been a smooth road—entrepreneurship is a winding road. While growing in my craft came naturally through interest, learning how to communicate my art to the world and navigating the business side as a young woman has been challenging. Finding the right mentors, clients, and partners took time and effort, but these challenges have all been incredibly rewarding. Over the last four years of dedicating myself fully to this career, I’ve gained invaluable lessons. For anyone just starting, my biggest advice is to pursue your passions, even when fear sets in. Growth and success often lie just beyond that initial imposter syndrome.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a luxury wedding photographer specializing in timeless, emotive imagery for couples who value storytelling and artistry. More than just taking photos, I craft an experience—one that is intentional, immersive, and deeply personal. My editorial-style approach captures the raw emotion of each moment while maintaining an effortless, timeless aesthetic. What sets me apart is my ability to blend artistry with an elevated client experience. From the first conversation to the final gallery, my couples know they are in caring hands. Above all, I am most proud of the relationships I build, ensuring every client feels seen, understood, and celebrated in this season of life.

Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
In 2024, I moved from Houston, TX, to Nashville, TN, leaving behind an incredible photography mentor who taught me so much about running a thriving wedding photography business. When I arrived in Nashville, I knew I needed to find new mentors—people who were further along in their journey but also kind, genuine, and dedicated to excellence. Those qualities have always guided me in choosing the right mentors, and they’ve never steered me wrong. As for networking, put yourself in rooms with people who inspire you—even when it feels intimidating. I’ve met incredible people in Nashville simply by attending events alone, pushing past fear, and being open to new relationships. Time and time again, I’ve been surprised to walk away, not just with valuable business connections, but with true friends.
