Today we’d like to introduce you to Aaron & Tamar Chipp.
Hi Aaron & Tamar, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers?
There’s so much to share, we’ll try to keep it succinct! We started the band in Michigan with another friend from church. None us were playing instruments or writing songs at the time, but we felt God telling us to start so we did. We had no idea what we were doing, we really started from nothing — just a word from God!
Fast forward a few years, and we released our first EP, started playing festivals and shows consistently across Michigan, and experienced some really cool opportunities along the way, including winning a few indie band competitions.
We also served at our church in pastoral and worship leadership for 10 years before we made our transition to Nashville in March of 2017. It’s been great to put down roots in a new city and continue to grow in a community of artists and friends.
We recently released a new single Highest Hallelujah and are excited about the new songs we’re writing with friends and the opportunity to travel and share them across the country.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Haha! Definitely not a smooth road, but the most adventurous paths aren’t paved. And we love adventure! Not unlike other creatives, we’ve had to overcome fear, self-doubt, disappointment, disapproval from others, budget constraints… the list goes on.
But God has been so faithful to us! He always shows up. Time and time again He brings the right people at the right time into our lives. He’s a master strategist and the best storyteller. We’re excited for the days ahead!
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Modern Day Cure is a worship collective led by husband-and-wife team Aaron and Tamar Chipp. The band’s heart is to exalt Jesus, share His truth, and see people changed by His power. Our name is inspired by Hebrews 13:8, which states, “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever.” This truth makes Him the modern-day cure. We believe Jesus is still the answer the world needs today.
We love that we get to partner with a diverse group of friends and musicians to offer engaging worship and teaching that crosses cultural and denominational boundaries.
Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
That the journey is just as important as the destination. It’s the journey that prepares us for the place we’re headed. Years ago, we found an art piece with a picture of an old bicycle that says “The journey is the destination”. We still have it and have hung it every place we’ve lived. The picture is crooked and falling apart and the frame is beat up, but that’s the point.
One of our favorite movies is The Five Heartbeats. The lead singer, Duck Matthews suffers a betrayal from people close to him and recants a quote from a music critic, “Donald Matthews will be a great songwriter when he suffers more.” Bumpy roads can lead to beautiful destinations and hard times can lead to greater art and greater beauty.
