Today we’d like to introduce you to Morgan Lee Powers.
Hi Morgan Lee, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I moved from Waco, Texas to Nashville in 2020 to write music. I realized I couldn’t do math or science at all, but one thing that I really loved was creative writing and music. *boom* songwriting… It was a way that I could express myself (and get over bad high school boyfriends) and I loved every part of the craft. I started writing when I was 14 years old and never stopped. It’s like a puzzle that I get to solve every single day and carry with me. I’m grateful for the ability to write songs and look forward to doing it every single chance I can. I was trying to pick what I should do after high school and my mom told me that I could do music for a job. She said I could move to Nashville and I should move to Nashville to try it. While I love my Texas roots, I found a new home and purpose in Nashville and in writing music for both myself and my own artist project as well as other artists finding their voice and their own music. It’s truly a calling from God and a blessing in my life.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road, but I found that it is very, very rarely easy for anyone. If it was easy, everyone would do it. It takes a lot of courage, a lot of confidence, and a lot of perseverance. A good piece of advice that I got from a Songwriting mentor of mine when I first got to town was “eat rejection for breakfast.” he was so right. That was (and sometimes still is) at the top of the menu. But if you want something bad enough, you’ll stick it out even when it’s hard.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’ve written a whole bunch of songs for myself and my own artist project, including my first album “How Naïve” in 2024. But I’ve also written for other people, including Small independent artist such as Madi Hendry, Selestial Alcoser, Vinny Tovar and more. It’s such a rewarding feeling when a song of yours gets cut (recorded) by another artist. I write primarily and country music, but I also dip my toe into Christian/worship music and Pop.
Are there any books, apps, podcasts or blogs that help you do your best?
Other than the Bible, there have been a couple of books and movies that I’ve inspired songs and creative projects for me. ‘Redeeming Love’ and Hunter S. Thompson’s Essays and a couple old westerns. I find their descriptive language to be such an inspiring way to pull new thoughts, ideas and lyrics.
