Today we’d like to introduce you to Olivia Ray.
Hi Olivia, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
So to sum my story up, I have always just LOVED music. I am very auditory and the range of things you can listen to always amazed me.
I am from Boston. I grew up believing in the power of a business degree and initially I didn’t even know a major such as “Music Business” could exist. After finding this major at Belmont University, I quickly realized that moving to Music City was going to be my way to get close to the thing that I loved.
After a few months of my freshman year, I saw that everyone around me was chasing their dreams. It was beautiful. So I started chasing mine.
It was 2021 when I started learning how to use a DAW and played around with writing my own songs and producing. It was such a trial and error period of life but I loved every minute of it! I found that I needed to focus more on the songwriting and leave the producing to the producers!
In 2022 I dropped my first single “oh sun” and although it’s not necessarily a “hit”, it was important to get it out there! From there I have been writing nonstop.
In the beginning of this year, early January, I have tapped into my true dream of DJing! It has been such a journey and so much learning but being able to go from one creative outlet to another is beautiful.
I now am at the point where I know who I want to be as an artist and I am loving sharing my art! DJing alongside new songs is what you can expect from Olivia Ray.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
I wouldn’t describe my journey as a smooth road… but I would describe it as enjoyable. Every moment of learning something new I become more and more confident.
Meeting new people and starting life in a whole new environment can be scary, but only if you let it. The perspective I chose to have was all about accepting any obstacle thrown my way and take it for what it is. A moment in time built for growth. And then I move on.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I describe my style of music to be alternative Neo-soul. I appreciate the use of strange and interesting beats/sounds that you have never heard before.
Within my songwriting, I specialize in using a conversational tone to convey simple messages that hold a heavier meaning.
I tend to play more with synths and the feeling of an atmospheric tone. I appreciate when songs truly make you FEEL.
I am most proud of my journey of confidence when it comes to my songs. I think that each song is its own work and I am able to appreciate the beauty within each of their unique tones.
The release of my first EP titled “bless your soul” is a body of work that takes you on a journey, yet provides a different feeling to each song. I think it is important for artists to provide their listeners with range and options of the moods they can listen to. This is something I will continue to do as I release more and more songs.
