Today we’d like to introduce you to Quinn O’Donnell.
Quinn, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
“Quinn O’Donnell”, or “Moldy” as some call me, started as just writing songs therapeutically and has evolved into so much more. I wanted to play shows at age fifteen, but because I was so young and had no experience, no one would book me. My parents were very supportive and suggested I play a show in our living room, thus beginning a regular series at our home. Eventually, it became too crowded, and that’s how I knew I was ready for a real venue in town. Now, over ten years later, I get to play shows all over Nashville and beyond!
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Oh, certainly not. There have been lots of struggles. I dropped out of college due to my anxiety and depression when I was nineteen years old. That was so terrifying. I had no idea what was going to happen to me, but I knew that I wasn’t happy. I’m so thankful that I did, because I would never be where I am today! I may not even still be playing music if I didn’t make that decision.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I absolutely love shoegaze music and I always have. I don’t know why it took me so long to figure out that that’s the type of music I wanted to make. I love atmospheric guitars paired with emotional songwriting. The feeling I get from playing a show and sitting in that space with an audience who cares deeply is indescribable. I wouldn’t go so far as to say I’m the only shoegaze artist in Nashville, but I’m certain that I’m one of the only ones.
Are there any books, apps, podcasts or blogs that help you do your best?
Oof, thats a tough one. I love to read and I always have a book on me. My favorite book of all time is “As I Lay Dying” by William Faulkner. I even wrote a song about a character in that book. Reading really inspires me to try and write more.
