Today we’d like to introduce you to Reign Lafreniere.
Hi Reign, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I was born in the Bay Area and was a resident of California for most of my life. I come from a pretty musical family and growing up would often see my sister and mother dance circles around me. After time in a church choir and practicing guitar I began performing small open mics and being a part of smaller music scenes until I started my band. About half a year later after doing so I got in contact with Edgeout Records which I did not expect. Since then things started to fall in place and I started meeting my band members in the most coincidental way. We worked for about a year and a half playing shows every weekend and building our fan base until UMG agreed to sign with us. Since then we have been working on our move to Nashville and the release of our new album which will be the first music we have released since the start of the pandemic.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has been anything but a smooth road for us. The pandemic came around which allowed for us to focus on our writing but at the same time halted any shows and events we were planning to do. Though things became difficult emotionally and financially it really helped us get closer together and work towards our common goal of making music together.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am the frontman, singer and songwriter for my band. I’m mostly known for my guitar tricks and growly vocals and I’m most proud of how our entire band has evolved over the years. I remember distinctly this moment in the studio while we were recording our album. After hours and hours of messing up and not being used to the studio environment we finally got in a groove, there was this moment when I was looking at my bandmates and thought to myself that this is something I could do for the rest of my life and it would bring me purpose and meaning. It could be one of my least favorite songs and I still would have fun performing and singing it because of the people who were playing the music with me. Of course, I don’t hate any of the songs on our new album but it definitely is inspiring to be a part of something and know that you have people in your corner who want to help make the vision come true.
What matters most to you?
The moment that, when performing with others, everything clicks into place. I love the feeling of getting in sync with other musicians to the point where the crowd around you can get locked in as well. It’s a magical feeling that, in a world that consistently can make one feel like there is no place for them, can completely give meaning to a moment. I once heard somebody say that music is just chaos attempting to organize itself and I for a while thought that was a really cheesy line until I first felt that feeling.
