Today we’d like to introduce you to REV.
Hi REV, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I am a 22-year-old artist from Missouri. I started pursuing my dreams to be a hip-hop artist at 16 years old but have been writing songs since I was just 11 years old. In high school is when I decided that making music is what I really wanted to do with my life and went against all odds to make it happen. I moved to Nashville at 19 years old for the first time to chase my dreams and work with some great people out here. I had to move back to Missouri for a year and some months to be with my family and face some trials and tribulations. I got through them and moved back here again to go all out and make this year be the year I make it. I have an EP dropping in May called “Pretty Faces” and it really captures a wide range of situations and emotions I’ve been in or felt, and I truly believe it is going to do some big things for me. When I started making music at 16 years old, I was paying a friend for studio time to record in his closet. I saved up money to buy my own equipment and that is how I recorded my entire debut album “Young and Numb”
I then worked my way up to be able to record in professional studios and really hone in on my craft to be able to make the quality music that I make today.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The road has been everything but smooth. Some of my struggles where facing the criticism from both people that I knew and people I loved. I was told I should go to college, I should stick to factory work, or I should focus on something more realistic. I went against everything I was taught in order to follow my dreams and break the generational curses in my family. The road to success is a very long, narrow and bumpy road but it is worth the risk. Self-doubt was a big issue for me for a period of time as well, but I learned that the most important key to following a dream is believing in yourself and being your own biggest fan if you want to achieve your goals. Staying on track and holding myself accountable is what keeps me focused and working every day towards being my best self.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am an artist. I started out with rap but have written a bit of everything at this point. I’m most proud of my writing talents and my ability to turn an idea of a song into a reality. My sound stands out, it’s hard to explain but I’ve learned by working with several other great artists that the process I go through when I write and record music is so much different than anyone else’s.
What would you say has been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
Trust the process, enjoy the journey, and most importantly trust God. We don’t have all of the answers, we can’t always tell what lies on the road ahead of us. As trials and tribulations in life present themselves it is important to stay calm and turn every negative into a positive. Everything happens for a reason.
Life is too short to worry about the past or the future. The only thing that exists is the present. life is 10 percent what happens, and 90 percent how you react to it.
