Today we’d like to introduce you to Rowanne McKnight.
Hi Rowanne, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I launched Nashville Artist Collective in 2016. The company was founded in Charleston and there are now Collectives in Atlanta, D.C. in addition to Nashville. Each of us are hyper-local. I represent 16 Nashville based contemporary artists. The artists submit pieces each month and on the 1st of each month, we present a fresh gallery online. We also partner with area non-profits each month, donating a portion of our profits to worthy causes around Nashville. This gives our customers a great way to support the community through the arts. The business was started as an exclusively online venture. The idea was to meet collectors where they are, on their devices. We have the ability to reach our customers on the West coast just as easily as the ones down the street here in Nashville. I partnered with other local brands on pop up events to gain awareness of the business and the artists. As the business grew, I brought on a fantastic Operations Manager, Carrie Anderson, and moved into a small showroom/office. 2 years later, we were bursting at the seams again. We have recently made a big jump to a proper showroom and retail space with the amazing women from Woven Goods Co.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
It has certainly has had its bumps, but the next right thing seems to keep unfolding. Some of that is due to me having a long and winding career road from working in the music industry, jewelry business, online marketing and start up technology. I also stayed home with my kids for 10 years…All these experiences were valuable. I learned what I didn’t want to do with my time and talent, for one. I learned that balance is elusive but working at something you love is so gratifying. I am so lucky that I get to work with some of the most talented artists in the country.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I represent and promote a collection of contemporary Nashville artists. I work to present their work in a fresh, approachable and gorgeous way. This starts with great photography, fun events and, now, a physical space in which to experience the art among vintage rugs and unique gifts.
I think I am known for working well with artists and helping them reach their artistic and professional goals. I love my relationships with clients, as well. From the first apartment to a detailed design project, they are each exciting in their own way.
I also love interacting with other gallerists and art consultants. I try and foster community over competition. A rising tide lifts all boats is an important motto for me.
Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
I absolutely believe that no one makes it alone. The broader the network, the better. I have several mentors who help me navigate financial risks/obligations, work through business growth plans, help me recalibrate when work/life is out of balance. Whether this is a regular exercise group, a business organization, a Bible study or a neighborhood potluck – show up! The universe is sending us the right people – we just need to pay attention!
