Daily Inspiration: Meet Sandra Ventura-Benitez

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sandra Ventura-Benitez.

Hi Sandra, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I grew up with a camera in my hand and always being creative. Growing up in New York and moving to Nashville was a big transition. Because most of our family was upstate. When we moved to Nashville, I always took photos of my family, the only subjects I had.

It’s funny now because my family would ask, “Sandra, what do you want to be when you grow up?” I would always respond and say, “an artist!” As I got older, I maintained that dream to be an artist and pursue higher education. In high school, I started volunteering with diverse organizations whose mission was to empower the Latino community. Then, with the help of my family, friends, and clubs, I went to Watkins College of Art, my second dream college.

Being at school helped me realize that I enjoyed taking portraits and hearing others’ stories. I graduated from Watkins College of Art with a Bachelor of Art in photography. At the moment, I’m trying to establish myself as an artist.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
I am an introvert through and through. That’s been one of my struggles, putting myself out there.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I currently work for a career readiness and career access program called YMCA Latino Achievers. Right now, photography is my second job, and I would love to make it my full-time.

At the moment, I photograph different events and portraits, but I would love to focus on portraiture. I am good at directing my clients to look their best; I allow myself to have creative freedom whenever I interact with clients and collaborators.

What sets me apart and that I can visualize and execute ideas.

What were you like growing up?
Growing up, I always had a camera in my hand. I loved the process of creating. So with my mom’s help, we would just do different things together. I would hide behind my mom’s legs because I was always shy.

Personality-wise, I was always quiet but straightforward. But, I would participate in anything that had to do with art.
