Daily Inspiration: Meet Sara-Lane Boudreaux

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sara-Lane Boudreaux.

Hi Sara-Lane, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself
I’m Sara-Lane Boudreaux! I’m originally from Brighton, TN (a small town north of Memphis) and have been living in the Nashville area since 2011. I moved here for a design internship that summer, fell in love with the city and a certain guy named Stevie, and basically never left.

Now, Stevie and I live in Thompson’s Station with our 17 month old daughter Sadie Garnett and our cat Hershel. When I’m not photographing weddings and stay-at-home-mom-ing, you can find me learning to sew, designing things for my Cricut obsession, antique shopping, tinkering with my many film cameras, or planning our next family trip.

My love for photography started young. As a kid, I would ask for film cameras and camcorders for Christmas and birthdays. I would photograph my horses, cats, dogs, friends, and brothers. Whoever with two or four legs would let me, really. This hobby took shape as I got older, yet it was always a hobby. It was not until college that I understood being a photographer could actually be a career path for me. I was in school with plans to be in the medical field in some aspect, having a miserable time. Hesitantly I made the switch to graphic design classes, testing the waters, and following a terrifying gut feeling that this was the right path for me.

As I was taking classes for graphic design, I added on photography classes as a secondary major. Really honing skills, studying the greats, discovering how to tell stories through the camera. During this time a friend of a friend asked me to photograph their wedding. I naively thought shooting weddings would lack creativity and be a very boring, formal task, but I wanted the experience and (as a broke college student) the money. Quickly I found out weddings were quite the opposite and were also a ton of work! I continued shooting more senior sessions, couples, engagements, and conceptual work as I learned and grew as a student.

I was asked again to photograph a wedding right after I graduated, this time roping in my then-boyfriend (now husband) Stevie to second shoot. That first wedding we shot as a team really sparked something in us both. We loved it and had so much fun connecting with the couple and capturing their day. Through the years we continued to grow as a team with each wedding we photographed. We learned the ins and outs of the wedding industry, grew into our own style and point of view and understood the value of genuine connections with our couples.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The road to get where I am has certainly not been smooth. For many years wedding photography was a side hustle for me, and I could not have made the leap to full-time without the support of my husband, family, and friends. There were many seasons that I wondered if I would ever shoot a wedding again, and things were scary during the initial Covid lockdowns as well. I’d say the biggest struggle is overcoming my own doubts and continuing to fight when I felt like throwing in the towel.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
My business is Sara-Lane and Stevie Photography, and my husband and I are primarily wedding photographers who also shoot all the wonderful things that come before and after wedding days. Proposals, engagements, maternity, family. We have life-long “clients” and it’s amazing to walk through each big season of life with them, documenting their love and their families. We have a laid-back approach to weddings and are all about capturing each one in an authentic, beautiful way. For us, wedding days are not about building our portfolio, but about ensuring each couple’s story is told artfully and honestly. Connection is huge for us, and we take a lot of time to build relationships, trust, and comfort between us and our couples. We go into each wedding day with a heart of service to the couple and their families. If that means we have to sit our camera down for a moment to help the bride put on her veil or to hand the father of the bride a tissue, that’s what we do. Our style is one that captures raw emotion. We give attention to the tender, quiet moments of tears and hugs, as well as those big moments bursting at the seams with laughter and happiness.
