Daily Inspiration: Meet Sofia St. Jean

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sofia St. Jean.

Hi Sofia, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I began my musical journey at four years old when I decided that I wanted to be a rockstar. I fell in love with music in a different way at that time; I knew that I was working towards something bigger than myself. My father always told me to sing for the people and remember my roots.

I chose to plant my seeds in all genres so I could be grounded in fluidity. This mindset was the foundation for my self dubbed “wavy music”: which is the expression of music beyond the boundaries of genre. Growing up in a Haitian household felt like a music scene within itself. My father made sure to show me as much music as he could share. I began to get serious about music when I was in high school; I released music for the first time and began to play small shows.

The struggle of stage fright was my biggest battle at the time. I overcame it by always putting myself in spaces where I could sing in front of people. As I conquered my fears the universe started answering my prayers. I reached out to a record label at 17 and they loved my energy. After many conversations, I got signed and started working on my debut album.

I made the big decision to go to college for music and I don’t regret it now. Music is my nature and my first love. At 21 years of age, I know that I will do this for lifetimes.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The biggest obstacle I have faced is performance anxiety. Imagine knowing exactly what you want to do and the only thing stopping you is the fear of doing it. I felt very stagnant.

I used to make myself play the piano that was at the center of my high school. I knew that spot had the most foot traffic so I would have to perform through the anxiety. Things changed for me the more I practiced consistency.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I produce, engineer, compose, and I am a multi-instrumentalist (guitar, bass, drums, piano). I am mostly known for my voice and its uniqueness. I pride myself on my lyrics and the many styles of songwriting that I play with.

If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
Being myself and creating avenues for others to be as well. I always dreamed about being myself before I knew how to, I hope to inspire that natural freedom in others.
