Today we’d like to introduce you to Stephanie Johnson. Stephanie and her team shared their story with us below:
Stephanie has been a full-time advocate for those in her community since she was a teen. She spent much of her youth volunteering at the Nashville Downtown Library and advocating for students in her school at Hunters Lane High School through the Oasis Center and Peer Leader Program. While in those roles, she was able to gain valuable advocacy experience. Once Stephanie entered college, she took on the fight of advocating for victims and survivors of human trafficking. She hosted large fundraising events, and with the help of teachers and advocates like Dr. Michelle Rickert, she helped to successfully lobby the Virginia state congress for the passage of anti-human trafficking legislation.
Stephanie is now and always has been an advocate for those in need, and she has always been relentless in making sure change happens. When she moved back home to Nashville in the winter of 2015, she hit the pavement hard by learning about the issues in her community. So, whether it’s over-development in the city or the growing housing crisis that has pushed many on the streets and out of the city, Stephanie is now ready to take it to the next level and dedicate her time to working for her community. To create change, one must be strategic and relentless in those pursuits.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has not been easy. In any form of advocacy work, there will always be trials. When you work to free the oppressed, others on the opposite end are working to stop you.
You have to have an attitude of “I won’t stop until the work is done” in order to make it through sometimes. Even now, in my political campaign, people on the other end are working to stop me and mute my voice, but I won’t stop until I win.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
In addition, to being politically involved, I run a small skin care business that focuses on severe skin alignments like eczema and psoriasis, called Shea + Coconut.
I also have been completing my grad degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling and learning clinical herbalism on the side.
