Today we’d like to introduce you to Trae Taylor.
Hi Trae, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
So I was serving in the 82nd Airborne Division, living near Fort Bragg NC. We had a routine night jump but not routine winds. I’m a pretty big guy and I already fall fast, but during this jump I fell extremely fast and my parachute did not open completely until the end of my decent. Sadly, this resulted in my receiving a TBI that I did not report to my commander because I did not want to lose my job as a Platoon leader. Three weeks later I was in a head on collision seven miles from base and hospitalized. My career as a combat engineer officer was over. The Army gave me the choice to medically retire or switch to a support role. It was the hardest decision I ever made in my life and lead to me isolating severely. In the mist of my isolation, my brother gave me an old guitar he bought from Walmart in middle school. All he said was “I think you need this more that I do..” I learned three chords, E,C & G – I was hooked. I began hitting open chords and just writing and writing. The. I began posting some of my songs on Instagram and making at home demos on my laptop. This ultimately lead me to moving to Nashville and learning how to be an artist and songwriter.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The road has been anything but smooth. It had taken everything I have learned from my family and the military to even make it to this point. I’m in a field where a lot of people have been doing this since they were children. Therefore, I was a little late to the party but everything happens for a reason. Yes the journey hasn’t been easy but I’ve made the best of friends and had the best of times amongst it all.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am what I call an artist writer. I am both, equally. I love both, equally. I am known for being able to come up with songs with strong melodies that also bend genres. I love story telling and also using metaphors that make listeners want to hear a song again. I am most proud of being featured in some of Spotify and Apple Music’s biggest editorial playlist in the Country Genre! Whats sets me apart is my work ethic, relatability, and my versatility as a writer and performer.
If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
I was very inquisitive and ambitious. I always wanted to understand how things work and then when I did, I wanted to then make my own version of it. I have always loved to laugh and tell jokes with family and friends, sometimes at their expense (laughter). I have also always been very competitive and enjoy sports, card games and debates.
