Daily Inspiration: Meet Troy Donohue

Today we’d like to introduce you to Troy Donohue.

Hi Troy, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
I started up my first band, known as Rockstar Racecar when I was 10. It was a family band, only meant to play one show. But after that, we started to get more shows in the area and started to write original songs. Eventually, I did the cool thing and kicked my parents out.

To replace them, I started a de facto music school out of my living room for new bassists, eventually getting a multitude of friends and classmates to fill the roles. After 4 albums and a quarantine side project, the ceiling for a New Jersey music career was seemingly reached. Therefore, I took my chances and moved to Music City, where I am looking to chase the dreams that many others come to seek.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I don’t think anyone can say it’s been a smooth road, especially after the closure of everything in 2020. That was when the choice to move out of northern Jersey was really clear to me.

Every single opportunity that I could have had was wasted. In my opinion, my band best showed out on the live stage and that was barely possible anymore. I’ve played more in Nashville within a month than I had in Jersey the past year.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
While I have moved to improve and market my songwriting, I believe that the performance aspect is where I shine. I have always made a great spectacle whenever I take the stage if it’s just acoustic or in a band.

It’s where I can take my rock n roll energy and forget the world around me for a certain and entertain a crowd. I want to implement that energy into my songwriting and I always think of how I’m going to perform it first. My energy is how I think I get some great ideas.

We love surprises, fun facts, and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
While where I’m from and what I do is obvious from talking to me for 5 seconds, most people are surprised to find I’m a huge metalhead and punk. My last band was a punk band, the aforementioned Rockstar Racecar, and I’ve kept that attitude throughout my writing currently.
