Today we’d like to introduce you to Tyler Roberts.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I grew up in a small town outside Nashville called White Bluff and studied Business at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. While at UT, I studied abroad in Barcelona and backpacked around Europe in 2011. Experiencing the history, food, culture, and meeting people from everywhere completely flipped my world upside down—I was hooked. When I returned home, I couldn’t stop thinking about living abroad.
After graduating, I spent over five years in logistics in Nashville. It was a solid career, but the pull to live internationally never went away. In my mid-20s, I took the leap and moved to Shanghai, China, where I taught English for two and a half years, traveled extensively across China and Southeast Asia, met lifelong friends, and ultimately met my wife, Maria, who’s from Madrid, Spain.
In 2019, we moved to Madrid. Over the years, friends and acquaintances kept asking for advice on visas, housing, study abroad programs, and trips. By 2024, after helping many people informally, it became clear there was a real opportunity. That’s how Spain Relocation Advisors and Don Voyage Travel were born. For Don Voyage Travel, my wife and I work closely with travel agents, hotels, car rental companies, guides, and more to craft truly personalized itineraries, drawing on our experience visiting over 75 countries internationally. For Spain Relocation Advisors, we collaborate with a trusted network of lawyers, visa specialists, translators, real estate agents, tax professionals, estate planners, and other local experts to guide clients through every step of relocating to Spain—whether it’s for retirement, remote work, or study abroad.
Today, we run both businesses while raising our two young boys, Liam and Luca, who are bilingual and dual citizens. At the core of everything we do is our own experience—moving abroad transformed our lives personally, professionally, and culturally. Our goal is simple: to help others overcome the mental and logistical barriers that hold them back and show that moving abroad—or traveling internationally—is not only possible but life-changing. We love guiding people through the process, celebrating their courage, and making the experience as seamless and exciting as possible.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Starting a business overseas has definitely come with its challenges. Navigating Spain’s bureaucracy is notoriously tricky—visas, residency paperwork, taxes, and legal requirements can be complex and time-consuming. Add in currency conversions, coordinating with local partners, growing a repertoire of trusted travel partners such as hotels, airlines, car rental companies, local guides, etc. and managing a growing client base, and it can get overwhelming pretty quickly. On top of that, balancing work with family life—especially raising two young kids—has required constant juggling and careful planning. Every challenge has tested our patience and problem-solving skills, but overcoming them has also made the business stronger and more rewarding.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
At Don Voyage Travel, we craft personalized trips that go far beyond typical tourist itineraries, blending cultural excursions, immersive local experiences, and off-the-beaten-path adventures. While we specialize in Spain and Europe, we also create trips across Asia, Africa, the Middle East, and even the U.S. and Canada, drawing on our own travels—having explored nearly every country in Europe, lived extensively in China, visited much of Asia and Africa, traveled across the Middle East, and nearly all 50 U.S. states (just five to go!). Our goal is to help clients discover hidden gems alongside iconic landmarks—whether it’s the Sagrada Familia in Barcelona, the Great Wall of China, or Petra in Jordan—but also the fairy-tale town of Cesky Krumlov in the Czech Republic, the historic kasbahs of Aït Ben-Haddou in Morocco, Red Sea diving adventures near Aqaba in southern Jordan, the amazing old town of Khiva in Uzbekistan, and much more . Every experience we recommend has been vetted personally or through trusted local contacts, ensuring seamless, unforgettable trips that feel unique and different for our clients!
At Spain Relocation Advisors (SRA), we work with clients from around the world — Americans, Canadians, Brits, Germans, Australians, Colombians, and many others — who are looking to make Spain their home, whether for remote work, retirement, study abroad, or other visa pathways. Spain offers an incredible quality of life: sunshine, exceptional food and wine, and a culinary culture famous for tapas, pintxos, paella, and regional specialties that bring people together. Add in its deep history, diverse landscapes from beaches to mountains, and vibrant culture, and it’s easy to see the appeal. What makes it especially compelling is that all of this often comes at a significant lower cost of living than in the U.S., allowing retirees, remote professionals, and students alike to stretch their budgets while enjoying a truly enriching lifestyle.
Because we’re based in Madrid, we’re able to provide true on-the-ground support from day one. What sets Spain Relocation Advisors (SRA) apart is our full-service, highly personal approach. While many firms focus only on visas or a single step of the process, we guide clients through the entire relocation journey — from the beginning such as moving logistics and preparation checklists to immigration paperwork to housing, healthcare registration, school placement, and comprehensive study abroad support. For students and young adults, that means helping them navigate program selection, visas, housing, and settling in so they can focus on having a meaningful, once-in-a-lifetime international experience rather than worrying about logistics. We intentionally limit the number of clients we take on so we can give each one dedicated attention, communicate proactively, and ensure they feel fully supported every step of the way. Our work is hands-on and relationship-driven — never transactional or distant.
At the core of it all is lived experience. I relocated to Spain myself, and our extensive travel across Europe and Asia informs how we support others pursuing international opportunities. With boots on the ground in Madrid, we understand both the practical and emotional sides of moving abroad. Whether we’re helping a family, digital nomad, or retiree relocate to Spain through SRA, guiding a student into their first global experience, or designing a one-of-a-kind journey with Don Voyage Travel, our mission is the same: to make life-changing international experiences accessible, seamless, and unforgettable.
Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
I don’t see myself as a reckless risk-taker, but I strongly believe in taking calculated risks. Moving to Shanghai without fluency in the language was a significant leap, as was later relocating to Madrid and building a life in a new country, again without speaking much Spanish. Now, I speak Spanish daily and fluently as well as being able to “get by” in Mandarin. The biggest risk, however, came when I decided to go all-in with my two businesses—Don Voyage Travel and Spain Relocation Advisors—from scratch. This required navigating unfamiliar legal and tax systems, establishing companies, learning the realities of entrepreneurship abroad, and earning clients’ trust from day one. Taking that leap while raising two young children added another layer of responsibility and uncertainty. It was challenging, but every step reinforced my belief that growth comes from stepping outside your comfort zone. For me, the greatest risk has always been not trying. Every major risk I’ve taken has expanded my perspective and my life, and I can’t imagine looking back years from now and wondering, “What if I had tried?” Not taking a chance—and living with that regret—has always been far more daunting than any challenge I’ve faced.
